And it's a lot easier without too much caffein. That's why I drink Sanka.'" Alexei Lein of Leningrad, USSR, will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah in absentia as Howard Norber twins his special ceremony with the Russian Jewish youth at services 8:45 a.m. Saturday at Cong. Beth Abraham Hillel Moses. Howard is the son of Mrs. Charlene Norber of West Bloomfield and the late Mr. Raymond Norber. The Lein family applied for emigration to Israel in August 1978, but were re- fused for reasons of "sec- recy." The Bar Mitzvah's father, Yevgeny Lein, worked until 1978 as chief scientist in an institute, but lost his job upon applying to emigrate. He worked as a night watchman, tutored math- ematics privately with offi- cial recognition. He began participating in non-official seminars in applied math in Leningrad, and from 1977 was interested in Jewish subjects including Hebrew. Daughter Sasha was a student at Leningrad Uni- versity until 1978, when she was expelled because of her desire to repatriate to Is- rael. In 1980, after some threats, Sasha was beaten up near her home. Lein was told by the local police that one of the hoodlums, who had beaten his daughter, had sustained a head injury as a child and was not an- swerable for his actions. On May 10, 1981, the KGB and police prevented the lecture that was to take place in the Lein flat as part of the Jewish Seminar Pro- gram by stopping all his guests near his home. The lecture was instead given in the flat of one of his neighbors, refusnik Grigory Wasserman. During the next lecture, on May 17, in the flat of Wasserman, the police entered the flat and tried to provoke the Jews who were listening to the lecture, which was about Shabbat. The police arrested Lein and accused him of obstruct- ing authority. During the week of Aug. 3, 1981, he was sentenced to two years working for the national economy. In summer 1982, Lein was released from the labor camp for "good behavior." Sasha had been readmitted to the university a couple of years ago. She was expelled again before she even took her exams. `Chelouche St.' film featured sOirterot kods Cong.
