New York (JTA) — A
computer-based manage-
ment system is now in oper-
ation at Temple Emanu-El,
a Conservative synagogue
in Providence, R.I.
The computer system,
popularly dubbed "Temple
Tracker," was designed by
Ellen Franklin, a computer
syS-tems analyst and wife of
the congregation's rabbi,
Wayne Franklin; and Steve
Levitt, executive director of
the 1,150-family congrega-
tion.
The system is based on an
IBM personal computer
with terminals in his office,
in the office of the rabbi's
secretary and in the
synagogue's bookkeeping
office, Levitt said.
The system was put in op-
eration in mid-January. It
has been loaded with gen-
eral ledger information,
which includes the
synagogue's balance sheet,
income statement and
ledger, along with informa-
tion on each congregant.
Levitt said the synagogue
had been interested in using
a computer system for some
time but on investigation of
the hundreds of systems
currently on the market
indicated that none met the
synagogue's needs. He said
the computer will soon be
programmed to hold the
synagogue's social clubs'
members names and ad-
dresses so the clubs can use
the computer for mailings
and rosters. He predicted
that eventually, all aspects
of the synagogue, such as
the religious school, the
museum and the
synagogue's cemetery re-
cords will be plugged into
the system.
U.S. official
denies plan
to attack Iraq
Washington (JTA) —
The State Department de-
nied last week that the
United States has ever con-
sidered an air strike by its
air force or that of Israel
against the installations
manufacturing lethal gas in
Iraq.
"There has been no con-
sideration whatsoever of
United States air strikes
against those alleged instal-
lations," Department
spokesman John Hughes
said. "Nor has the possibil-
ity of Israel attacking the
installations been dis-
cussed."
Israel's air strike in June,
1981 in which it destroyed
Iraq's nuclear reactor out-
side Baghdad, was poorly
received in the U.S. at the
time.
A story alleging that the
United States was taking a
"preliminary- look" at the
feasibility of an air strike
appeared in the New York
Times last Friday. The re-
port said that there were
many in the United States
government who would like
to see Israel repeat its suc-
cessful 1981 strike.
