THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Navon won't seek Labor post,
Peres runs unopposed in party

ing down after a five-year
term.
In the Likud. meanwhile,
a leadership tussle has be-
come a certainty following
Ariel Sharon's formal an-
nouncement that he would
stand in the Herut Central
Committee against Premier
Shamir.
Navon said he warmly
thanked all those who had
urged him to make a bid —
and he now urged them to
work all-out for a Labor vic-
tory in the election. He him-
self would work diligently
in the campaign, would
stand for the Knesset, but
would not want "the No. 3
slot or any other slot."
Peres is reported to have
offered Navon the No. 3 slot
on the Labor list, with a fu-
ture cabinet post of deputy
premier and domestic policy
overlord. But Navon's sup-
porters in the party were
'miffed at this and felt their
man should have at least
been offered the Foreign
Ministry. Peres is reported
to have insisted that the
Foreign Ministry is re-

Jerusalem (JTA) — Yit-
zhak Navon has decided not
1 ,
,s=un for the leadership of
the Labor Party. The former
IK'ael president announced
his decision at a press con-
rence in Jerusalem last
.., riday, having previously
informed party chairman
Shimon Peres by telephone.
- fhe decision means that
Peres will be unchallenged
as Labor's candidate for
premier in the July 23 elec-
,)n. Peres' perennial rival,
former Premier Yitzhak
Ttabin, confirmed this last
Friday, saying Peres would
be re-elected to the leader-
tip unanimously.
Navon's announcement
-ame after two days of in-
nse speculation in the
party and the public, and in-
tense pressures and
ec:inter-pressures on the
former president.
Navon acknowledged
frankly that his wide per-
mal popularity might
..save been an asset had he
been the,party's candidate.
He said he had been under
? pressure

to make a bid for
eadership ever since stand-

served for Abba Eban who
has been loyal to Peres
throughoutthe years of con-
flict with Rabin. —

Meanwhile, Deputy Pre-
mier David Levy remained
undecided whether to chal-
lenge Shamir for leadership
of Herut when the party's
central committee meets on
Thursday.

He confirmed that
Shamir tried to persuade
him to avoid a leadership
contest, which was only
"natural," Levy said. The
deputy premier challenged
Shamir once before — last
September following the
resignation of Premier
Menahem Begin. At that
time, the Herut Central
Committee rejected his
leadership bid by a 60-40
percent margin.

The Herut leadership has
recommended to the party
secretariate that the central
committee decide only who
will fill the top spot when it
meets. The second and third
slots would be determined
in later, separate balloting.
