Spring books
cover variety
of subjects
A new novel from Aharon
Appelfeld and the English
translation of Rabbi Joseph
B. Soloveitchik's Halachic
Man are among the books of
Jewish interest that have
been issued for spring.
The Retreat (E.P. Dutton)
by Israeli novelist Appelfeld
deals with the assimilation
of European Jews at the
dawn of the Holocaust. The
story has been translated
from the Hebrew by Dalya
Bilu.
Halachic Man (Jewish
Publication Society), ori-
ginally published in He-
brew in 1944, was the
pioneering attempt by
Rabbi Soloveitchik to delve
into Jewish law. The new
edition is the first printed in
English.
In another spring release,
Condemned (St. Martin's
Press), Paul Kuttner offers
the fictionalized account of
a Holocaust survivor who
recognizes one of his tor-
mentors nearly four decades
after his imprisonment in a
Nazi concentration camp.
Flight from Sorrow
(Atheneum) by Felicity
Barringer is the story of
Tamara Wall's battle
against cancer, from which
the outspoken attorney died
at the age of 47 in 1980.
Authors Stephen Happel
and David Tracy, both
well-known Catholic
theologians, present an in-
terpretation of Catholic
identity in A Catholic
Vision (Fortress Press). The
volume features a foreword
by Dr. Carl Hermann Voss
of the National Conference
of Christians and Jews.
Middle East
earthquakes
Tel Aviv (JTA) — A
number of minor earth tre-
mors were reported in Israel
and the nearby eastern
Mediterranean area late
last week.
The quakes in. Israel, re-
ported by the Seismological
Institute, were all less than
4.0 intensity on the Richter
Scale and were not felt by
residents. They occurred
mainly in the Jordan Val-
ley, a major geological fault,
but their epicenter was
some 30 miles underground,
the institute reported.
A tremor of 4.6 centered
near Limassol in Cyprus.
Another quake, of 5.0 on the
scale, appeared to have oc-
curred near Cairo.
Agudat pushes
Sabbath ban
Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Agudat Israel Party is
pressuring the government
to enforce religious bans,
particularly the Sabbath
laws. Its four Knesset mem-
bers extracted promises
from Health Minister
Eliezer Shostak and Trans-
port Minister Haim Corfu
on Monday to crack down on
doctors who perform abor-
tions outside the strict
limits under which they are
allowed and from the Dan
and Egged bus companies
for running buses on the
Sabbath.
