Chilean envoy
to U.S. still
undecided

Washington (JTA) — The
State Department Tuesday
refused to confirm or deny
that it has rejected Chile's
choice of its ambassador to
the United States, Mario
Barros Van Buren of San-
tiago, who was a former
editor of an anti-Semitic
magazine. But the Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith (ADL) and the Wash-
ington Office on Latin
America, which had urged
Barros' rejection, told the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency
that the State Department
has rejected Barros.
Barros was deputy editor
of the now defunct Chilean
publication Estanquero
when, according to Rabbi
Morton Rosenthal, director
of the ADL's Latin Ameri-
can Affairs Department,
the magazine was repeating
"some of the worst Nazi and
anti-Semitic canards." The
publication claimed that a
"gigantic conspiracy" in-
volving capitalism, Com-
munism and Judaism
"pushed" Germany into
World War II. In a 1970
book, Barros called Hitler
and Mussolini "young lead-
ers" expressing "national
traditions."
According to the Wash-
ington • Office on Latin
America, which describes
itself as a private human
rights monitoring organiza-
tion, Estanquero was ph-
ased out in the mid-1950s. A
spokesperson for the Office
said Barros is now an offi-
cial in Chile's foreign serv-
ice department. The disclo-
sure on Chile's choice of
Barros for its ambassador
was made in this week's
New York Magazine.

El Al sets
twin-engine
flight record

Tel Aviv (JTA) — El Al
Airlines completed the first
non-stop trans-Atlantic
commercial flight by a
twin-engined plane last
week, only hours after the
International Federation of
Airline Pilots Associations
(IFALPA) ended its 39th
annual conference here, the
first ever held in Israel.
The twin-engined, spe-
cially adapted Boeing 767
aircraft used for the 11 hour
flight from Montreal to Tel
Aviv was a subject of dis-
pute at the IFALPA parley.
The plane is fuel-
efficient, requires a smaller
cockpit crew and is easier to
fill than the 747 jumbo jets.
But the IFALPA has called
on governments and on in-
ternational civil aviation
agencies to conduct further
studies of the safety of
twin-engined planes on
long, overwater flights.
The pilots insist that such
flights be limited to routes
over which there is never
more than 60 minutes fly-
ing time between suitable
airfields. Some govern-
ments and aircraft man-
ufacturers, including Boe-
ing, maintain that the plane
is safe for 90 minutes' flying
between airfields.
