New York (JTA) — Syria
"will never accept any lin-
kage between Syrian and
Israeli withdrawal" from
Lebanon, President Hafez
Assad told Time magazine
in an exclusive interview
published this week. While
rejecting a simultaneous
withdrawal of foreign forces
from Lebanon, Assad added:
"When a government of
national unity is formed as
a result of the desire of the
Lebanese government, we
will meet its request to
withdraw unreluctantly,
and this could be within a
month, or within days or
months."
The interview was con-
ducted by Time Inc. Editor
in Chief Richard Duncan,
the magazine's Henry
Grunwald, Time Managing
Editor Ray Cave and
Richard Duncan, the maga-
zine's chief of correspon-
dents. It was the first inter-
view Assad has granted to a
U.S. publication since the
bombing of Marine head-
quarters in Beirut last Oc-
tober.
Meanwhile, in a second
Time- interview, Jordan's
King Hussein said relations
betweem the U.S. and the
Arab world were unlikely to
improve unless the U.S.
adopts a "more balanced
attitude" in its Middle East
policy.
"The influence of Israel
on the Congress is tremen-
dous," Hussein said. "I don't
know how this serves U.S.
national interest . . . If I had
known that the President
was going to have to go be-
fore the (United Jewish Ap-
peal) to appeal to them to
help to get us the Stingers
(anti-aircraft missiles), I
would not have sought it for
the President.
"There is a sad situation
we're in: Israel has a right to
veto anything the U.S. de-
cided to do for any of its
Arab friends. There is a
double standard in all this,"
the king said.

MFO praises
Israel, Egypt

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Both Is-
rael and Egypt got top
marks from the multina-
tional force and observers
(MFO) in the Sinai last
week.
The outgoing MFO com-
mander, Lt. Gen. Fred-
rik Bull-Hansen, and his
replacement as of this week,
his fellow Norwegian Lt,
Gen. Egil Insebristsen, told
the press here that both Is-
rael and Egypt were
cooperating in ensuring the
peace in Sinai. Gen. Bull-
Hansen said that the "sin-
cere desire for peace" of both
parties had been one of the
prime reasons for the MFO's
success.

Broadcast Hall

New York — CBS News
correspondent Bill Moyers
was the featured speaker
this week at the opening of
the National Jewish Arc-
hive of Broadcasting at the
Jewish Museum.
