Rothstein •Mayor City of Oak Park Richard Lobenthal Executive Director Anti-Defamation League New volume published in 'Guide to America-Holy Land Studies' An indelible record of American interests in the Holy Land, thereby em- phasizing the role of pre- Israel Palestine and the subsequent Israeli pro- gressions, is provided in an important series of books published by Praeger in association with the Inter- national Scholars' Col- loquim on American Holy Land Studies. Issued under the title "Guide to America-Holy Land Studies," the third volume in the series covers the period 1620 to 1948. Dealing with economic relations and philanthropy, the third volume is espe- cially important, histori- cally, because it draws upon the archives and activities of many notables. Edited by Nathan M. Kaganoff, historian with an important role with the American Jewish Historical Society, the new volume continues the close in- volvement in the prepara- tion of the series by Dr. Moshe Davis. Dr. Davis, who edited the first two volumes dealing with the American presence in the Holy Land and the political and Zionist rela- tions, provides an anno- tated introductory analyz- ing the economic and philanthropic aspects of the historic movement. The roles of many impor- tant personalities are dealt with here. There is, to use an exam- ple, a tribute to the late Dr. Emanuel Neumann, one of the most noted Zionist lead-- Stephen Wise Dr. Moshe Davis ers in the era commencing as early as the second de- cade of this century, about whom Dr. Davis wrote: Dr. Neumann "devoted much of his ingenuity to practical economic enterprise, which he considered to be the cor- nerstone of political work." This volume makes ex- tensive use of important archives, including the ac- cumulated records of Sup- reme Court Justice Louis D. Couple speaks vows Ruth Freda Birnbaum and Rabbi Daniel Lee Per- nick were married recently in a double-ring ceremony at Cong. Mishkan Tefila in iChestnut Hill, Mass. Wise and many others. The compiling of exhaus- tive material forms an in- ventory of great signifi- cance in the economic and philanthropic spheres for students of Holy Land de- velopments, with emphasis on the special concerns in Jewish ranks. Especially accounted for in the researched material are the American Economic Committee for Palestine, Bank Leumi, Central Zionist Office, Youth Aliya and the Zionist Commis- sion. It is especially, notewor- thy that the contributions to the philanthropy related to the Holy Land, as in most instances in Zionism, are linked with the name of Henrietta Szold, the foun- der of the Hadassah women's Zionist organiza- tion who spent the last years of her life in Pales- tine. A score of additional names of eminent leaders, who could be referred to in a review, would add to the recognition of the impor- tance of this volume. The entire series, "Guide to America-Holy Land Studies," thus emerges as a project of great importance. —P.S.
