The Best of Everything

WHERE ELSE CAN

- you go and find a different

set of salt and pepper shak-
ers on each table? . . This
may sound a bit unusual .. .
and is . . . But second to the
food, it has already become
somewhat of a conversation
piece about the new
Romanik's in Orchard Mall
on Orchard Lake Road and
Maple.
They come in forms of
small Buddhas, birds, etc.
. . . Favorite of many is the
combo of dog and fire hyd-
rant.
This might give you a lit-
tle bit of insight about the
creativeness at Romanik's
. . . The former Stafford's
and its Frisco's operation
have been almost com-
pletely and very cleverly
renovated . . . in a style so
indicative of the fine work
by commercial designer Ron
Rae, whose style is his sig-
nature.
There's even throw car-
° peting that isn't carpeting
. . . But you'd have to bend
down and touch . . . it looks
so real . . . The pieces are at
entrances to Romanik's din-
ing room and its lounge .. .
Even the frills and frays are
there . . . According to Ron;
in many years gone by,
people were too poor for car-
peting and had it painted
on.
Some chairs are now
white . . . with padded seats
. .•. and others a grayish
tone with padded seats and
backs . . . Small theatrical
lights shine onto a wall .. .
and large ultra-modern
light fixtures hang impos-
ingly from the soft green
ceiling.
One side of the main din-
ing room is covered arches
inlaid with a painted mar-
ble look . . . The other side
has glass on the walls with
tiny spotlights shining onto
each panel . . . No more
looking out into the drab
parking lot, as was the case
at Stafford's.
What luck to have one of
the top-notch waitresses
around to serve us . . When
was the last time you heard
a waiter or waitress say,
"Excuse my reach?" . . .
They don't come much bet-
ter than Phyllis Randazzo, a
former stalwart waitress at
Raleigh House (one of the
best ones Sammy Lieber-
man had) and Standard
Club on Northwestern Hwy
. . . Her smile, efficiency,
personality and warm con-
geniality are tremendous
assets . . . She's the kind of
waitress people hope will
serve them.
After almost filling up on
the rolls . . . they're so de-
licious . . . made by pastry
chef Werner Heyer, noted
for his Shneckens (little
pecan rolls) 15 years at
Franklin Hills Country
Club and now Romanik's
. . . we finally gave our or-
ders . . . Everything is made
fresh to order, with
minimums of salt and oil.
The house salad on a cold
plate is made with crisp
bibb lettuce (don't see too
much of this), romaine,

sliced carrots, cauliflower
and homemade pumpernic-
kel croutons.
The sauteed liver and on-
ions on a bed of rice that I
had was superb . . . Such
very tender liver and so de-
licious a taste . . . The pasta,
eaten by Miriam Kottler of
Miss Miriam's in Oakland
Mall, is made without any
oil . . . and her salad with
mussels was a standout.
And when was the last
time you saw a waitress or
waiter reel off the evening
specials without looking at
a sheet of paper . . . Phyllis
is a gem.
Romanik's has a fresh
flower on every table .. .
white tablecloths, white
cloth napkins . . . 85 seating
in main dining room and 30
in dining area off lounge .. .
It is open seven days .. .
only for dinner as of this
Monday . . . no more
lunches.
Days will be used for more
rest by brothers Steve and
Andy Romanik . . . plus
banquets . . . and more
hours to prepare for the
evenings . . . It'll have jazz
on weekends till 2 a.m. . . .
and in summer will stay
open until 4 a.m.
Steve is a graduate of
Culinary Institute of
America in Hyde Park, N.Y.
. . . He followed high school
in South Florida with cook-
ing and learning trek to
Europe . . . Steve loves to
cook . . . and was one of the
partners for 21/2 years when
Milford's Appe'teaser was
built in 1979 . . . He was a
valued chef at Standard
Club on Northwestern Hwy.
. . . Andy graduated Cornell
University three years ago
in hotel and restaurant
management . . . went to St.
Francis Hotel in San Fran-
cisco . . . and is back here
with Steve.
Their sister, Susan
Romanik, is head of laser
graphics at Time magazine
in New York . . . She has a
complete photography
studio and printing press at
her Westport, Conn. home
. . . doing the menus for her
brothers (they've changed
three times already, putting"
on new items since opening
Dec. 15).
The 2,200-square-foot
kitchen at Romanik's is
spotlessly clean . . . with
gleaming white tiles and a
sea of stainless steel . . . Se-
eing a kitchen like this cer-
tainly enhances one's
appetite . . . and desire to re-
turn.
A very fine combination
at Romanik's in Orchard
Mall . . . Excellent service,
superb fresh food, ample
portions, reasonable prices,
such a pleasant atmosphere
... and owner/chefs who
love to cook . . . Romanik's
offers much reason why it
has become a "hotspot" for
dining in the northwest
area.
