Tel Aviv (JTA) — In a
clash between villagers and
members of the militia that
had been headed by the late
Maj. Saad Haddad, three
residents of the south
Lebanese Shiite village of
Jibshi were killed and 10
were wounded Wednesday
when the soldiers opened
fire on a mob surrounding
them.
Israel Defense Force
units encircled the village
after the incident and im-
posed a curfew.
The clash began when
militia members entered
the village to search for
arms. They were reported to
have uncovered large quan-
tities of military hardware
and sabotage material.
Lebanon army sources
said the militia members
opened fire only after they
had been attacked by
enraged villagers and some
of the militiamen had been
injured by rocks thrown
from rooftops. The village is
reportedly a hotbed of sup-
porters of Iran's leader,
Ayatollah Khomeini.
In another incident, two
Israeli solders were
wounded in south Lebanon
when their patrol was am-
bushed near the Arab vil-
lage of Selim.
`Talking Books'
for LD kids
New York — Jewish stu-
dents with learning dis-
abilities are now eligible to
use the Jewish Braille Insti-
tute's Judaica library of
"talking books."
The Institute, which has
been serving the blind and
visually-impaired since
1931, has more than 90,000
cassettes and reels of tape of
Jewish books, texts and rec-
reational reading.
The program is designed
to benefit children unable to
master basic reading skills,
children whose re-a-ding
pace is extremely slow and
who are therefore unable to
complete school assign-
ments in the allotted time,
and learning-disabled chil-
dren with substantial gaps
between their reading skills
and intellectual level.
Parents who wish to ob-
tain materials from the JBI
library may write to the
Jewish Braille Institute of
America, 1100 E. 30th St.,
New York 10016.
Israel farm
plan for Arabs
Jericho (JNI) — Arab
farms in Judea, Samaria
and the Gaza district will
soon be incorporated into Is-
rael's master farming plan,
according to Agriculture
Minister Pessah Grupper.
Grupper told a group of
Arab agriculturalists this
month that in joining the
plan's framework, they
would have to agree, as will
the Jewish farmers, to limit
production of certain crops.
Farming sources believe
such coordination will
eliminate the competition
which now leads to occa-
sionally flooded markets.
