Okay okay okay. So I stir
my coffee with my soup
spoon. But by Israeli
standards, yes, by George, I
am downright mannerly!
My mother would never be-
lieve me, but it's true.
What a peculiar position
to be in: The brash young
man finds himself in a coun-
try where "brash" describes
those with gentler natures.
What a switch! Okay it's the
price I have to pay for living
in my own country.
So be it. It's almost fun
now being proud of my good
manners.
For a switch.

Sure, if he needs to. Only
he doesn't have to be all that
brutal — just pushy enough
maybe to keep himself from

going broke.
Even so, I've decided my
country needs a big lesson
in manners. It doesn't need
another raging bull with
over-active elbows. It needs
people willing to demon- `)

behavior. Wow! My country
needs me!

comes in and barges up
front. Which is the oleh?
Two men: one waits
patiently to board a bus
while the other insinuates
himself around, through
and sometimes over other
passengers to board first.
Which is the oleh?
The same two in a bank;
one waits a polite distance
behind the customer at the
counter who is in the midst
of a transaction, the other
stands head-to-head, look-
ing over the first customer's
shoulder as the teller counts
out the money. Which is the
oleh?
In a word: an oleh — espe-
cially a western oleh — can
be picked out of a crowd of
people who are wearing ba-
thing suits. He's the one
who isn't shoving. He's the
one polite one.
It stands to reason. West-
ern politeness is viewed as a
form of hypocrisy here
(smile at 'em while you stab
'em in the back).
But, by Yully, I think po-
liteness — western or
otherwise — has a definite
place in a bank or bus line.
It keeps the blood pressure
down. It keeps the teeth
from being gritted down to
stubs. It feels better. It's
nicer. It makes sense.
Aha! I said to myself. If I
don't want to look Ameri-
can, I just have to switch to
being rude. Well, well.
Can a nice Jewish boy
shoulder little old ladies
aside and still find happi-
ness?
