Women's Phonogift among Campaign closing activities Detroit area women will be asked to aid Jews in need — at home, overseas and in Israel — when a Jewish Welfare Federation Women's Division volun- teer calls next week to ask for a gift to the 1984 Allied Jewish Campaign. Phonogift, the Women's Division annual pledge drive on behalf of the Cam- paign, runs from March 25 through April 1. Division volunteers will call 5,000 local women. "We are ask- ing women to renew their commitment to Jewish identity this year," said Judith Naftaly, Phonogift chairman. "Here in Detroit, the Al- lied Jewish Campaign reaches into nearly every Jewish household, includ- ing those touched by eco- nomic recession and other hardships. Overseas, Jews in 30 countries receive our assistance through the Joint Distribution Commit- tee. And In Israel, our Cam- paign dollars help the Jewish Agency to attend to human needs. We wouldn't be able to accomplish all of this without Phonogift." Leaders and volunteers of the 1984 Allied Jewish Campaign will gather for the final progress report meeting 10 a.m. Sunday at Jewish Federation Apart- ments in Oak Park. Rabbi M. Robert Syme of Temple Israel will bring a first-hand report from his mission to Eastern Europe and Israel, division chair- men will share results so far of their workers' efforts, and volunteers will gather for the annual "family por- trait." Brunch will precede the meeting. Rabbi Syme was selected by Federation to serve on the United Jewish Appeal Rabbinic Cabinet and to participate in the recent mission with his colleagues from acoss the country. Volunteers in teams of two will go out on Buddy-Up Day — an intensive, per- sonal solicitation effort on April 2 to reach all major contributors on behalf of the Campaign and Project Re- newal. The following Sunday, April 8, workers will hold the closing telethon at United Hebrew Schools. This sum, according to Dr. Daniel G. Miller, ICRF president, is the largest single grant of voluntary funds ever made to encour- age cancer research in Is- rael. Since its formation in 1976, the ICRF has allo- cated $1.5 million for re- search into the causes and treatment of cancer. Dr. Elliott Osserman of the Institute of Cancer Re- search at Columbia Univer- sity, chairman of the ICRF scientific advisory board, will preside at the day-long deliberations of the review panel.
