"Voice of the Turtle," comprised of, from left,
Judith Wachs, Derek Burrows, Lisle Kulbach and Jay
Rosenberg, will perform in April for the affiliates of
the United Hebrew Schools.

"Voice of the Turtle," the
United Hebrew Schools'
artists-in-residence for
1984, will perform "A Coat
of Many Colors," a Sephar-
dic musical concert, April 3
at 8 p.m. at Temple Beth El.
"Voice of the Turtle," a
Boston-based quartet, has
specialized in synthesizing
the music of the Sephardic
Jews with Renaissance and
Medieval styling and in-
strumentation since 1977.
Each of the musicians plays
at least six instruments.
Some of the songs are sung a
cappella; others require
several of the 30 historical
instruments the group
utilizes onstage. Their
hand-woven, Renaissance
style costumes have been
modeled upon textile scraps
which date from biblical
times.

"A Coat of Many Colors,"
the story of Joseph and his
coat, incorporates melodies

from Spain, Bulgaria,
Yugoslavia and Greece.
Lyrics are in Hebrew and
Ladino.
The concert is the culmi-
nation of the annual artist-
in-residence program spon-
sored by the Cultural Coun-
cil of UHS. "Voice of the
Turtle" will present a series
of educational programs
and workshops beginning
April 1. They will perform
for elementary through
high school students from
UHS affiliates, Akiva,
Hillel, Shaarey Zedek and
Temple Beth El.

The April 3 concert is
sponsored by the Cultural
Council of UHS in coopera-
tion with the Woman's Aux-
iliary of UHS and Temple
Beth El. Tickets for the con-
cert may be obtained at no
charge form UHS, 354-
1050; Adat Shalom
Synagogue, 851-5100; and
Temple Beth El, 851-1100.
