Congressmen See JVS Project

The Jewish Vocational
Service's Project BRIDGE
was inspected by Con-
gressmen George Miller
and Sander Levin this
month.
Project BRIDGE provides
career counseling and job
placement services to
newly-unemployed persons.
Since its inception two
years ago, Project BRIDGE
has served 375 clients. Sixty
percent have been placed in
jobs. The Congressmen re-
• sponded positively to the re-
sults of this program and
indicated that considera-
tion would be given to the
establishment of similar
programs in other cities.
The clients interviewed
indicated that their period
of unemployment ranged
from one to several years.

Ex-Detroiter
Celebrates 100th

Former Detroiter Mrs.
Anna Shewach of Los
Angeles, Calif., celebrated
her 100th birthday on
March 1 in the home of her
children, Mr. and Mrs.
Harold (Dorothy) Shrier in
Beverly Hills, Calif.
Attending the celebration
were children, Mr. and Mrs.
Joseph Shewach, Mr. and
Mrs. Harry Shewach,
Henry Shewach and Mr.
and Mrs. Abram (Helen)
Goldberg. Mrs. Shewach
has 13 grandchildren and
18 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Shewach and her
late husband Isaac were
long-time residents of De-
troit, where she was active
in many Jewish organiza-
tions. ,

Purim celebration on Sun-
day at the main Jewish
Community Center.
This year's celebration
will include the following
free events: a puppet show,
a clown show, balloon ani-
mals, Purim carnival games
for 2 1/2-6 year olds, gym
games and races for
second-sixth graders, a spe-
cial - Purim party for
toddlers and parents, and
Purim crafts for children
age 5-9. Additional activi-
ties include a Purim party
for active adults, and a spe-
cial showing of "Annie" at
the center's Purim Popcorn
Playhouse.
A special Maccabi Purim
Fun Run will also be held at
2 p.m. There is an entry fee.
The Center will present

Application Deadline Nears
for Laker Israel Scholarship

Jewish students who wish
to study in Israel have only
until March 30 to send an
applications for the Harry
and Sarah Laker Israel
Youth Scholarship.
Awarded by the Harry
and Sarah Laker Israel
Youth Scholarship Fund,
the scholarship is an annual
award of at least $1,500 to
enable a local Jewish male
or female to attend a lead-
ing university in Israel for a
full academic year.
The winning student may
choose one of five leading Is-
raeli institutions at which
to study. Accredited for the
scholarship are the Hebrew
University, Ben-Gurion
University of the Negev, Tel
Aviv University, Bar-Ilan
University and Haifa Uni-
versity.
Only residents of the met-
ropolitan Detroit area qual-
ify who are currently
attending a college or uni-
versity in the continental
United States and have
applied to a school of higher
learning in Israel.

The Jewish Community
Council has coordinated an
exhibit, "Children of the
World Paint Jerusalem,"
which will be on display
from Monday through
March 30 at Silver's, 151 W.
Fort St., in downtown De-
troit. Hours are 8:30 a.m.-
5:30 p.m. Monday through
Friday.
The council also is co-
sponsoring a multi-screen
audio-visual presentation,
"Another Israel," at Or-
chard Mall Sunday through
March 27. The presentation
can be seen during mall
hours. It is presented in
cooperation with the Israeli
Consulate-Midwest Region
and the Detroit Round
Table of the National Con-
ference of Christians and
J ews. .
