Oak Park, Mich, 48237 NEW YORK (JTA) — The Rev. Jerry Falwell, president of the Moral Majority, sought to allevi- ate concern within the Jewish community that Christian fundamentalist support for the state of Is- rael may be based on efforts to have the Jewish people return to Israel for enmasse conversion. "While I do believe in the imminent return of Christ, I do not believe that there is anything in relation to the Jewish people of the state of Israel that must yet occur in order for the Messiah to come," Falwell told some 200 persons at the Theodore Herzl Institute last week. "So the devotion of most Christians to the state of Is- rael is not tied to that." Falwell also distanced himself from Christian groups whose primary ac- tivity is to proselytize Jews and engage in missionary activity. He described the Moral Majority as a "politi- cal organization" and said his group does not provide any financial support to these groups. While acknowledging that his mission is "to pre- ach the Gospel," Falwell said that Moral Majority, "is not singling out or zero- ing in on any segment of the population, and that in- cludes the Jewish people." He said he is an advocate of "religions freedoms everywhere," and called on Israel to "go the extra mile in the area of religious lib- erty." "To ask Conservative Christians to reject what they feel is part of their re- sponsibilities to their belief is unrealistic," Falwell said. "No, we do not support Jews for Jesus. Yes, we do want to evangelicalize the world No, we're not zeroing in on anybody." are, who its enemies are and who can be counted on in crisis." Speaking with reporters before addressing the insti- tute, Falwell described the Palestinians as a "genuinely suffering people." But he asked why Israel is being asked to solve the Palestinian problem and suggested that Jordan is a Palestinian state. He also rejected the idea that Israel should relinquish the West Bank, saying it would be a fatal mistake. JERRY FALWELL Falwell, who was warmly received by the audience, was speaking on his "perspective of U.S.-Israel relations." He himself brought up the topic involv- ing the reason for Christian fundamentalist support for Israel, and this issue was also discussed during a brief question and answer period. Falwell reiterated his strong support for Israel, saying, "I would think that every American should be totally committed to the welfare of the state of Is- rae." He said he and the Moral Majority support the bill now in Congress which calls on the Reagan Ad- ministration to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. He called U.S. policy in Lebanon an "embarrass- ment" and "liberation" of Lebanon from Syrian and Palestine Liberation organ- ization "slavery." According to Falwell, the Israeli inva- sion was "surgical" in its implementation. Falwell said that among Israel's best friends in the United States are "Bible- believing conservative Christians." He added: "The time has come for Israel to recognize who her friends Anti-Semite is Applauded Outside Canadian Court TORONTO (JTA) — Jim Keegstra, the former high school teacher fired for preaching anti-Semitism in his Eckville, Alberta classroom, emerged from a courthouse last week to the cheers of supporters who carried signs charging that he was being "persecuted by Jews." Keegstra, who had also been mayor of Eckville and was defeated in a re-election bid last year, faces charges of violating Canada's anti- 'hate laws. He appeared in a Red Deer, Alberta, provin- cial court only briefly to of- ficially state his preference for trial by jury instead of a trial before a judge. The Red Deer courthouse was packed with spectators as Judge Ben Casson. ,$et aside the week of June 4-8 for a preliminary hearing. Keegstra will be charged with promoting hatred against a religious group, which is a crime under Canadian law. Keegstra was fired for telling his stu- dents, that the Holocaust was a hoax, that Jews are the root of all evil, and that there was an international Jewish conspiracy to control the world. His anti-Semitic indoctrination raised pro- tests from Eckville parents although no Jews live in that tiny Alberta village. But Keegstra apparently has friends. As he left the Red Deer court with his lawyer, Doug Christie, a Western Canada separatist, about 40 of them burst into applause. They had been picketing the court with signs reading, "Cowardly politicians crucifying Jim Keegstra" and "Who's Next? Keegstra persecuted by Jews." Keegstra, smiling broadly, refused to talk to reporters except to say he was pleased by the amount of money people have do- nated for his defense. His wife, who says she is "sick" of the publicity, confirmed that he was received hun- dreds of letters of support from all over Canada and only a few critical ones. Israel Linked to U.S.-Latin Policy by Envoy NEW YORK (JTA) — Ambassador William Mid- dendorf, the U.S. represen- tative to the Organization of American States, mein- tained last week that the United States and Israel have a mutual strategic interests in Central America. Addressing a luncheon sponsored by the Center for International Security, a Washington-based non- partisan organization headed by Dr. Joseph Churba, Middendorf said: "Soviet-prompted activi- ties, coupled with the cur- rent instability in Central America, have the potential for causing a diversion of re- sources needed to contain the USSR in the Eurasian theater and to weaken our response to Soviet proxies in the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere." He said the Soviets have promoted violence in Cen- tral America and the Mideast "through a net- work of surrogates and ter- rorists. For this reason, the Jewish community and Americans in general need to devote careful attention to Central America which, like the Mideast, is vital to our natioal security." Middendorf noted that in Central America today a battle is being waged by "atheistic Communism to destory our Judeo- Christian civilization." He said that Communism in Central America is facing opposition from religious people — and therefore the church is often Com.; munism's target. He cited Nicaragua as the example, stating: "Among the most outspo- ken anti-Sandinista forces in Nicaragua have been some of the churches and clergy in that country .. . The Sandinistas have made the religious institutions of their country a principal target of their activity and propaganda." Abraham Melnikov, commander of the Jewish self-defense group in the northern sector of Jerusalem in 1920, sculpted a monument in tribute to Joseph Trumpeldor and other members of the Jewish Legion who died in the defense of Tel Hay.
