tions to the city.
The idea of a suspension
bridge over the Straits of
Mackinac was first pro-
posed in a St. Ignace news-
paper advertisement by
William Saulson in 1884.
Saulson owned a depart-
ment store and used draw-
ings of such a bridge in his
advertisements. He repor-
tedly got the idea from the
building of the Brooklyn
Bridge.
In Saulson's time, the
possibility of building a
bridge across the Straits
was considered as remote as
that of flying to the moon.
Saulson later moved to De-
troit and served as
president of Cong. Shaarey
Zedek from 1903 to 1908.
Raymond Zussman
earned the rank of Second
Lieutenant in the U.S.
Army in World War II. He
was killed Sept. 21, 1944,
nine days after leading the
liberation of Noray
LeBourg, France. For his
bravery, he became the only
Jewish soldier in World
War II to be awarded the
Congressional Medal of
Honor, this country's high-
est military honor. The
entire community of Detroit
participated in reburial
services for Lieutenant
Zussman when his body was
returned to this country in
1948.
