THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
I
Danny Raskin's
iThe Best of Everything)
IT'S NOT MUCH to look
at . . . in fact folks go here in
Kansas City, Mo. and keep
their heads down . . . This is
Jess and Jim's Steak House,
where I went with son Scott
and Kenny Maier . . . One
room has white tablecloths
. . . another red . . . where
we sat . . . with slanted ceil-
ing and antique-like chan-
deliers . . . Half the room is
paneled and the other half
wallpapered.
It sure wasn't the decor
that brought us . . . Jess and
Jim's is known all over for
its steaks . . . and curiosity
made a believer out of me
. . . They have a 30-ourice
porterhouse ($13.75) . . .
Everybody passed on this
. . . But Scott and Ken /got
their 25 oz. Playboy Strips
($13.75) and -I was well
satisfied with a 16 oz. strip
sirloin ($11.75).
All steaks are served with
baked, French fried or cot-
tage fried potatoes, salad
and garlic toast or
homemade bread . . . All
had cottage fries . . . but Les
Ball says we missed a bet by
not having the double-
baked potato (people used to
phone ahead and reserve
them). -
Jess and Jim's accepts
no credit cards ... and
they'll sell you • the
. steaks for V2 price to
take home uncooked
. . . In a glassed dis-
play case are all the
sizes of steaks one can
order ... Hades could
freeze over before I'd
wait an hour ... but the
boys wanted to and no
sense being a poor sport
... It was almost worth
the wait . . . especially
with such a nice, pleas-
ant, efficient waitress
like Patty Sellars.
Original owners were
Jess and Jim Wright in
1938 . . . In 1957 it moved a
couple of blocks east to pre-
sent locale . . . Owner now is
R.C. Van Noy.
People who feel like eat-
ing chicken, go over to
Stroud's in Kansas City,
Mo. . . . and if they can get
past the looks of a real dive
outside, they'll see a little
improvement inside . . . The
place is a ramshackle house
with faded curtains on
slanted wood beams . . . But
that chicken, we're told, is
among the best . . . with ev-
erything served family-
style.
I'd have to be crawling on
my stomach with hunger
before waiting over two
hours for any kind of food
. . . But a lot of people didn't
share my opinion .. . They
stood outside Stroud's
drinking beer . . . A fellow
would come out, take some
names and pop back in.
The young folks just
grabbed some more beer,
sat on steps or in cars ...
and even went visiting .. .
coming back later ...
Going to Stroud's for
dinner is a mighty long
evening out ... If it's at-
mosphere people want in
the 250 seater, they don't
come here . . . But for real
good pan-fried chicken,
Stroud's is said to be for
them.
The day before, I had a
very pleasant lunch with
Fran Ball and our son Scott,
visiting from University of
Texas in Austin . . . It was at
a place called Bristol, also in
Kansas City . . . where
wonderful waitress Shayla
King . . . so personable,
pleasant and congenial .. .
was a delight.
Bristol is noted for its sea-
food and rightly so . . . My
New England'clam chowder
was full-bodied, creamy and
very tasty . . . Then Shayla
brought me a wonderful
quiche with bay shrimp,
tomato and herbs . . . Bristol
is one of 60 restaurants
owned nationwide by
Gilbert/Robertson . . . 47 of
them Houlihan operations.
That evening, with Les,
Fran, their son Jason and
Scott, I went to another G/R
eatery also in K.C., Mo. . . .
Fedora . . . recently opened
and needing much brushup
on its service . . . It's not
necessarily an Italian res-
taurant . . . but the menu
includes a lot of dishes from
Italy.
I had a strange mines-
trone soup, heavily loaded
with tiny green leaves and
an overly large crouton .. .
The veal medallions were
really veal steaks . . . unless
that's the way it is prepared
in K.C. . . . The menu is in-
teresting, and no doubt
things will be done properly
. . . G/R is too good a com-
pany to do otherwise . . . On
the bar side, it's a real sw-
inging place.
ERRATA . . . Price of
Ciro's Festa Italiano full
course dinner with wine is
$12.95 per person . . . Ciro's
is on Cass Lake Rd. in
Keego Harbor.
NANCY GURWIN will
do a one-woman show April
4 . . . at 48th annual donor
luncheon of Bnai David Sis-
terhood on Southfield .. .
It'll be a tribute to the late
great Ethel Merman, idol
who Nancy patterned her-
self after.
Advance $15 donation
tickets are a must . . . none
will be sold at the door .. .
11 a.m. will be boutique
shopping . . . 12 noon lunch-
eon . . . and Nancy at 1 p.m.,
with Edgar Guest III nar-
rating . . . Call ticket chair-
person Nita Stearn, 967-
4088 or Cong. Bnai David,
557-8210.
SHORT-LIVED is Sero's
on Northwestern being
open seven days til 4 a.m.
. . . Will probably be re-
sumed on Friday and
Saturday eves during sum-
mer.
ZIGGY BELA is with
quartet at Blue Danube fine
Hungarian restaurant in
Windsor on Ottawa Street.
JOHN ZELLINGER,
known as the master host,
was feted with banner on
bandstand reading, "Wel-
come home John Z" . . . at
Kansas City Steak House,
Friday, March 16, 1984 31
14 Mile and John R. in War-
ren . . . which he opened six
years ago . . . After a two-
year stint at Ellie's, John is
back among many happy-
to-see-him people . . . John's
restaurant credits list Car-
son Chop House, Bistro
Bourbon, La Baron's, Ven-
ice Gardens, Bob Bolton's
and Palladium Lounge.
Among the 'guests greet-
ing John back were Al
Lenhart of Balloon Bar;
Herman Yagoda, Basin
Street; Kelly Burgess, De-
troit News; Rhoda Weiss,
Rhoda's; and so many many
more.
IRVING'S NUMBER
TWO has opened at Crooks
Rd. south of Big Beaver in
Troy . . . presently as a
carry-out . . . It is com-
pletely operated by the
Guttman family . . . who
