Dutch Planning
to Close Office
in Jerusalem

AMSTERDAM (JTA) —
The Netherlands govern-
ment has decided to shut
down its only office in
Jerusalem and transfer its
functions to the Dutch Em-
bassy in Tel Aviv. The move
was said to be for reasons of
economy.
The office processes the
applications of Dutch
Jewish emigres in Israel for
special pensions under a
1972 law authorizing
monthly payments to vic-
tims of Nazi persecution in
Holland. So far, about 2,000
Jewish immigrants have
qualified.
The office will be attached
to the consular section of the
embassy in Tel Aviv. It now
occupies a building on Bal-
four St. in Jerusalem which
had been the private resi-
dence of the Dutch ambas-
sador.
Holland was the only
European country to have
its embassy in Jerusalem. It
was shifted to Tel Aviv in
1980 as a gesture of protest
against Israel's formal an-
nexation of East Jerusalem.

Town Manager
Nixes Planned
Nazi Reunion

BONN (JTA) A reu-
nion of Nazi SS veterans in
Bad Harzburg was banned
by the town manager, Hork
Voigt last week on grounds
that the gathering,
scheduled for May 17-20,
would endanger "public se-
curity and order." The ban
was approved by the town
council.
Voight told reporters that
"violence and confronta-
tions were feared" if the
many anti-Nazi groups in
West Germany which have
protested the reunion car-
ried out their plans for
counter - demonstrations.
He said the ban was also in-
tended to protect the town's
"ideals" and avoid "mate-
rial damages."
About 800 former mem-
bers of the Hitler youth and
the Adolf Hitler Waffen SS
divisions and their families
were planning to attend the
reunion which was to be
disguised as a meeting of
"economic experts," town of-
ficials said.

IOC to Fight
European Sports
Ban on Israel

TEL AVIV (JNI) — In-
ternational Olympic Com-
mittee (IOC) President
Juan Antonio Samarach
has pledged that he will
make a concerted effort to
end Israel's exclusion from
European groupings in
Olympic sports, a policy
that has been adhered to
under pressure from Arab
countries.
Samaranch, in Israel for a
three-day visit earlier this
month, stressed that there
is no discrimination against
Israel in Olympic competi-
tion and that the Palestine
Liberation Organization
had no status within the
IOC.
