Israel Ballet
Salutes JNF

NEW YORK (JTA) —
The Israel Ballet, in a salute
to the Jewish National
Fund, performed in New
York last week at the City
Center. The benefit fea-
tured three dance selec-
tions, including an untitled
tribute to Raoul Wallen-
berg.
American actress Kitty
Carlisle Hart, honorary
chairman of the JNF, read a
statement by New York
Governor Mario Cuomo
proclaiming "Jewish Na-
tional Fund-Israel Ballet
Day."
Hart presented the Israeli
Tarbut (Culture) Award to
Sarah Caldwell, director of
the Boston Opera Company.
Caldwell is working with
the America-Israel Opera
Foundation to establish a
permanent opera company
in Israel.
The Israel Ballet per-
formed to recorded music on
a bare set, with subtle light-
ing by Hanna Vardi. The
program included "Men-
delssohn Concerto" and
"Serenade," the first ballet
George Balanchine
choreographed for the
American Ballet School in
1934.
The untitled work dedi-
cated to Raoul Wallenberg,
who saved thousands of
Hungarian Jews from the
Holocaust, was an abstract
ballet in two movements
created from Mahler's Fifth
symphony.
The Israel Ballet will per-
form April 26 in Detroit's
Ford Auditorium as part of
its U.S. tour.
