, Rabbi Arrested in Sabbath Riot

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Petah Tikva's Chief Rabbi,
Baruch Salomon, was ar-
rested Saturday for al-
legedly leading a mob of
ultra-Orthodox Jews who
broke into a restaurant that
was open on the Sabbath.
According to eyewitnesses,
they broke furniture and
doors, smashed crockery,
glassware and windows.
The incident was the
third in as many weekends
where Orthodox Jews re-
sorted to violence to force
the closure of places of busi-
ness and entertainment. On
Friday night they demon-
strated outside the Heichal
cinema in an attempt to
prevent patrons from enter-
ing. Police prevented a con-
frontation with a group of
secular youths who held a
counter-demonstration
against "religious coer-
cion."
Salomon was released
shortly after his arrest and
kept his promise to report to
the police after the Sabbath.
He was carried there on the
shoulders of religious Jews.
The police said he would be
charged with trespassing
and damage to property if
sufficient evidence was ob-
tained.
Aguda Israel circles de-
manded that the investiga-

tion of the rabbi's behavior
be dropped. Aguda MK
Menachem • Porush
threatened that the party
would leave Premier Yit-
zhak Shamir's coalition if
this was not done.

But other Aguda circles
denied that awalk-out was
threatened. The Aguda is
presently attempting to se-
cure larger financial alloca-
tions for their yeshivas at a

Race Murderer Is Indicted
in Synagogue Bombing

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.
(JTA) — A former member
of the Ku Klux Klan, a sus-
pect in at least 13 homicides
in seven states, Joseph Paul
Franklin, was indicated last
week for the bombing of a
Chattanooga synagogue on
July 29, 1977.
Franklin, 33, has been
serving a life sentence in
the federal penitentiary in
Marion, Ill. since 1982 for
the sniper slaying in
August 1980 of two black
youths who were jogging
with two white girls in Salt
Lake City.
• Dolls Fisher, a Chat-
tanooga police spokesman,
said Franklin had confessed

The
Mitzvot
of
Purim

Purim is the festival which
commemorates the breath-
taking victory over the mur-
derous designs of Haman.
Observed on the fourteenth
day of Adar, this joyous fes-
tival reveals the hidden Hand
of G-d in the events of man. It
is a day to be celebrated by
the entire family—not only
adults and boys and girls past
Bar/Bas mitzvah, but young-
sters too should be encour-
aged to fulfill the mitzvot of
Purim.

No one was killed in that
explosion, which razed the

Fisher said Franklin told
him he had hoped to blow up

GIVE
charity to
the poor

LISTEN
to the Megillah

To relive the miraculous events of Purim,
we listen to the reading of the Megillah—the
Scroll of Esther. When Haman's name is
mentioned, we twirl "graggers" and stamp
our feet to "drown out" his evil name. Tell
the children Purim is the only time when it's
a mitzvah to make noise!
Listen to the reading of the Megillah Sat-
urday night, March 17, after Shabbat, and
again on Sunday, March 18, during the day.

Concern for the needy is a year-round re-
sponsibility for the Jew On Purim, particu-
larly, it is a special mitzvah to remember the
poor.
Give charity to at least two, but preferably
more, needy individuals. The mitzvah is
best fulfilled by giving directly to the needy.
If, however, you can not find poor people,
place at least several coins into"pushkas"
— charity boxes. In the Megillah this mitzvah
is called "Matonot LoEvyonim"— gifts to
the poor. Even small children should fulfill
this mitzvah.

SEND
gifts
of food

On Purim we emphasize the importance of
Jewish unity and friendship by sending gifts
of food to friends. Send a gift of at least two
kinds of ready-to-eat foods, (for example,
pastry, fruit, beverage) to at least one
friend. It is proper that men send to men
and women to women. In the Megillah
sending these gifts is called "Mishloach
Manot" and should be done through a
third party. Children, in addition to sending
their own gifts of food, make enthusiastic
messengers.

EAT the
festive meal

As on all festivals, we celebrate Purim with
a special festive meal, when family and
friends gather together to rejoice in the
Purim spirit.
