Two Anthems,
Arab and Jewish,
for the Israelis?
(
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Israeli Arabs are urging the
adoption of a national an-
them that would express the
idea of two nations living in
a single country.
That was suggested by
the head of the National
Committee of Arab Town
Councils to the Arabic
Communist daily, Ittihad,
as the Knesset discussed a
bill to formally recognize
Hatikva as the national an-
them.
The bill, proposed by
Likud MK Pinhas Golds-
tein, raised objections from
several other Knesset
members who had reserva-
tions about requiring Is-
rael's Arab citizens to ac-
cept an anthem which ex-
presses the historic Jewish
yearning for the land of Is-
rael.

li
TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
Histadrut and the Coor-
dinating Committee of Pri-
vate Enterprises has signed
an agreement on payment
of an eight percent wage in-
crease, retroactive to Feb-
ruary salaries, to compen-
sate for the erosion of in-
comes due to the lag of cost
of living increments behind
the cost of living index.
Quarterly increases are
usually based on only about
80 percent of the index rise.
The agreement said that
maximum gross increases
would be 6,000 shekels (ab-
out $40) a month.
The farmers association,
whose representative
signed the agreement, said
they agreed in principle but
could not afford to pay the
increase because of stiff
competition from Spanish
oranges flooding the Euro-
pean markets.
