MK: Israel Doing All It Can to Rescue Ethiopia Falashas NEW YORK (JTA) — Is- raeli Knesset member Mor- dechai Ben Porat (Telem) said that Israel was making every possible effort, includ- ing the use of diplomatic channels, to aid in the re- scue of the Ethiopian Jewish community. Speaking at a news con- ference in the offices of the National Jewish • Commu- nity Relations Advisory Council (NCJRAC), Ben Porat said that since the es- tablishment of the state of Israel some 5,500 Falashas have arrived in Israel, the bulk of them arriving dur- ing 1983. Falashas who recently have arrived in Israel live in 17 absorption centers, five of which ate student cen- ters, according to Ben Porat, who is chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Commit- tee on Ethiopian Jews which comprises represen- tatives of the prime minis- ter's offices, the Jewish Agency, the Foreign Minis- try and the Knesset. Ben Porat stressed that retaining the cultural heri- tage that the Falashas bring from Ethiopia is a central concern to the Is- raeli government and said the Falashas represented a "very vital element" to Is- raeli society. He noted that in the absorption centers, the Falashas are not iso- lated from other olim and are in contact with olim from Russia and Syria. Without specifically re- ferring to any group, Ben Porat said he felt the rescue of Ethiopia's 18,000 member Jewish community was best left to the Israeli government and said he op- posed operations by un- trained independent organ- izations who have worked independently of the Israeli efforts. Ben Porat, 61, was born in Baghdad, Iraq where he was a leader of a clandestine Zionist youth movement be- fore arriving in Israel in 1945. He fought as a section leader of the Hagana in 1947 and later in the War of Independence. In 1949, he was sent to or- ganize illegal emigration of Jews from Iraq and was a leader in "Operation Ezra and Nehemia" which re- sulted in the escape of over 120,000 Jews to Israel. Dur- ing this mission, he was im- prisoned and tortured; but escaped four times although two of his colleagues were hanged. He is founding co- chairman of the World Organization of Jews from Arab Countries. The NJCRAC, which is the national coordinating and joint planning body of 11 national and 111 local Jewish community rela- tions agencies, last month adopted at its 40th anniver- sary plenary session in Washington a series of goals to aid the Falashas. The goals, as outlined by the NJCRAC, include the encouragement of tourism to Ethiopia to express sol- idarity with the Falashas; continued efforts to seek continued and expanded American emergency drought relief aid to Ethiopia and Africa; in- creased efforts to provide American Jewry with de- tailed information and interpretive resource mate- rials on the plight of the Falashas; and a unified and coordinated approach "with the primary authority re- sponsible for relief and re- scue." WASHINGTON (JTA) — John Vessey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told leaders of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) last week that Israel is a "strategic asset" to the United States and disclosed that "strategic cooperation between the armed forces of the United States and Israel have marched along stead- ily" despite any foot- dragging by "politicians." In a briefing last Thurs- day at the Pentagon, Vessey said there was "no reluc- tance in the armed forces to help Israel." The hour-long session covered security as- pects relative to the Middle East, Latin America, the East-West balance, and the strategic arms question. Vessey stressed that Israeli-U.S. strategic coop- eration should serve the common interest of both countries. "We don't want to endanger Israel's security by asking them to do some- thing for us in the larger strategic picture that doesn't make sense for them," he said. Noting' that a strong Is- rael is a strategic asset to the United States, he added that "an Israel we have trapped into being put into greater danger because we have pushed them up against the Soviets, doesn't help Israel and doesn't really help us." In response to criticism by Bernice Tannenbaum, chairman of the WJC Inter- national Affairs Commis- sion, over the proposed sale of stinger missiles to Jordan and Saudi Arabia, Vessey said that the request of the weapons had been initiated by the two Arab countries. "Jordan is frightened to death of Syria," he said, and the U.S. would insure that proper "safeguards" were part of any such arms deliv- ery.
