Oral History
Project Boosted

The Oral History Project
initiated by Shaarit Hap-
laytah Organization —
Survivors of the Nazi
Genocide — in cooperation
with the Holocaust Memo-
rial Center (HMC) will pro-
vide valuable, authentic
resource material for
teachers, students, schol-
ars, researchers and histo-
rians of Holocaust period,
according to Dr. John J.
Mames, chairman of the
project.
Dr. Sidney M. Bolkosky,
professor of history at the
University of Michigan -
Dearborn, who in 1975 pub-
lished "The Distorted Im-
age" analyzing the postwar
attitude of German Jews
towards Germans, coordi-
nates the project and con-
ducts training sessions for
interviewers.
Bolkosky and Mames
stated that thus far 150 in-
terviews have been tape re-
corded and 17 interviews
video-taped. The interviews
reflect a broad representa-
tion of survivors from
different ..–_‘ , 1ntries, from
various cultural and eco-
nomic environments.
The HMC is planning to
establish an independent
studio soon to accelerate the
process of video-taping. The
HMC is trying to increase
support for the project.
Completed tapes will be de-
posited in the Holocaust
Memorial Center.
Survivors are urged to
contact Shaarit Haplaytah
and the HMC Center
through Rabbi Charles
Rosenzveig, 661-0840; Dr.
Bolkosky, 593-5183; or Dr.
Mames, 353-0434, for inter-
view appointments.
Volunteer interviewers
and secretaries for trans-
cribing the interviews are
also needed.

Lawsuit
Is Settled

A lawsuit filed as the re-
sult of a letter to the editor
on the Middle East has been
settled amicably in an out-
of-court settlement.
Dr. Milton J. Steinhardt,
former chairman of the De-
troit Zionist Federation,
filed suit after Southfield
Police and Michigan Bell
Telephone Co. identified Sal
Khoury as the perpetrator
of harassing phone calls.
Khoury denied that he
made the calls.
After negotiations be-
tween Dr. Steinhardt and
Khoury, the two men and
their wives signed a state-
ment affirming "their belief
that freedom of expression
is encouraged as a cor-
nerstone of the American
way of life. •
"To express an opinion
contrary to a letter, it is
appropriate to write a letter
in response, rather than
impinge on the privacy or
peace of mind of the person
with whom one disagrees."
In addition, Dr.
Steinhardt and his son have
sent a contribution to a
charity that aids the
wounded in Lebanon.
