Lawsuit NEW YORK — An at- tempt by Auburn Univer- sity to have a federal judge dismissed from a desegrega- tion case on grounds that he had handled such suits as a lawyer was a thinly-disguised effort to disqualify him because he is black, according to the American Jewish Congress. A friend-of-the-court brief, filed jointly by the AJCongress and the Na- tional Bar Association, a group of black attorneys, asserted that if the judge is removed from the case, it would create a double standard under which any minority judge could be dis- qualified because of his minority status. The brief, which comes to the defense of Federal Dis- trict Court Judge U. W. Clemon, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. In the Auburn U. case, the Justice Depart- ment has charged Alabama • lies to date and volunteers will gather for the tradi- tional "family portrait." Rabbi Syme, a member of the United Jewish Appeal Rabbinical Advisory Coun- cil, was selected as a par- ticipant on a UJA mission to Israel and Eastern Europe, along with 24 of his col- leagues across the country. Soon to observe his 40th year in the rabbinate, Syme is a member of the Alumni Board of Overseers of He- brew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, which granted him a doctor of di- vinity degree in 1970. Rabbi Syme is past president of the Family Service Society of Met- ropolitan Detroit, a cabinet member of the Anti- Defamation League and a member\ of its Michigan Regional Advisory Board. He is former president of this region of the Central Conference of American Rabbis.
