It has natural hot mineral springs, whose water gurgles to the surface at an amazing 125 degrees Fahrenheit. And it was here that the Romans built a vast, elaborate network of bath houses. The baths of Hammat Gader have been known for millenia. The First Century BCE Greek traveler, Es- trabo, wrote about them; so did geographer El Mukadas in the 10th Century and the 13th Century Jewish traveller Ashtori Haparchi. The baths built at Ham- mat Gader were, according to the Fourth Century Greek historian Eunapeus, Out of town, call collect FOR PASSOVER ELEGANCE at the new ROYCE RESORT HOTEL Palm Springs, California A Pleasure or Y;74,,,:k° Business ‘7 . Ancient Roman bath houses and natural hot mineral springs also dot the site. "the second largest in the Roman Empire." They were in constant use during the Second and Third Cen- turies, were extensively re- stored in the Seventh Cen- tury and fell into disuse in the Ninth Century, after which centuries of earth, debris and neglect took over only to be removed in a series of excavations start- ing in 1979. Like Roman baths all over the world, the Hammat Gader bath complex incorporated different pools for differ- ent purposes. The genius of Roman engineering is evident everywhere. Extensive use was made of lead pipes for water supply and drdinage; there were intricate heating and cooling systems, and a whole array of sophisticated accessories were used by the Roman designers in their attempt to create optimum bathing conditions. But Hammat Gader is much more than archeol- ogy. It is a tourist park with acres of lush gardens, picnic, grounds, natural swimming pools fed by warm mineral water, waterfalls and a res- taurant. More than 1,000 people a day visit the site, and, of course, they also come to see the alligators. In 1980, more than 100 alligators were flown from Florida to Israel and they are here in enclosures, pools and lakes where they are separated by age group, and their progress and growth examined by scientists.
