U.S. International Univer-
sity (USI) team. The college
is located in San Diego and
plays a tough schedule na-
tionally.

Lieberman came to USI
from Kennedy High in
Granada Hills, Calif. In
high school he averaged 18
points per game and re-
ceived honorable mention
on several All-American
teams.
Making the USI team as a
freshman last year didn't
come easy. First, Lieber-
man came to training camp
30 pounts overweight, then
he did not get along with
some of his teammates.
Nevertheless, he cracked
the starting lineup and
ended his frosh season with
a 2.2 scoring average.

This year, however, his
shots are going through
the net and his coach,
Fred Goss, a standout at
UCLA in the 1960s is
pleased with Lieber-
man's progress. "He has
played against the best
and really gets the ball up
the floor and he can get
the ball to the right
people," Goss said.

Lieberman does have
problems when matched
against opponents a foot or
more taller than he is. How-
ever, according to Goss, "his
court savvy, ball-handling
and leadership abilities
make up for any liabilities
he might have on defense."

Next year is the year of the
Maccabia Games and
Lieberman is looking for-
ward to trying out for the
U.S. team.

height, or lack of it," he ex-
plains. "I can crouch low.
Basically you have to be
smart. Consequently, I do
not dribble too much. I
merely try to ditect the of-
fense. It has its good side,
too. Fans always like the
small guy. If I were in a
crowd, I, too, would cheer for
the small guy."

Lieberman has been
forced to face up to critics
who claim he can't play be-
cause of his height. "Even
my best friend told me I
would not play varsity ball
in high 'school," he says.
"Nevertheless, it sort of
grows on you. In fact, I kind
of like being called short.
