Defense Minister Moshe
Arens said the most seious
aspect of the abrogation was
the behavior of Syrian
President Hafez Assad who
was ready to take the most
extreme and brutal steps to
ensure that no Middle East
countries would open rela-
tions with Israel.

issued by the Prime Minis-
ter's office blamed Syria for
"forcing Lebanon to surren-
der to a dictate which means
a death sentence for Leba-
non's independence."
The Reagan Adminis-
tration, which played a
major role in negotiating
the agreement, also
reacted strongly to the
announcement of its
abrogation in Beirut.
Abandonment of the pact,
the second to be signed be-
tween Israel and a
neighboring Arab state,
was Syria's main condition
for good relations with the
Gemayel regime and a
cease-fire between the
Lebanese army and the
Syrian-backed Moslem and
Druze factions.

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Three people — two women
and a man — were killed
and eight injured when an
explosion ripped through an
Egged bus near the Central
Market and bus station in
Ashdod Wednesday morn-
ing.
Two of the dead were first
described as a husband and
wife, killed instantly. But
police later disclosed the
name of the man but not
that of the woman, who had
apparently been sitting
next to him in the bus.
The second woman was
critically injured in the
blast and died later in the
hospital.
The terrorist attack
was the first carried out .
in Ashdod. The town
council met Wednesday
night in special session to
decide on steps to be
taken to try and prevent
recurrences. Council
spokesmen said they
would consider whether
to bar Arabs from attend-
ing the weekly "open
market" in the town,
which attracts Arabs
from the nearby Gaza
strip who come to sell
their wares and agricul-
tural products.
Security forces detained
more than people for ques-
tioning.
According to the bus
driver, who was forced
against the windshield but
suffered no injuries, the bus
was carrying between 10
and 15 passengers at the
time of the explosion.

Lebanon hinted that it
was prepared to renegotiate
terms for the withdrawal of
Israeli forces from south
Lebanon. It spoke of
guarantees that Beirut
would prevent the reinfilt-
ration of terrorists into the
region close to Israel's
northern border. This was
greeted by skepticism in Is-
rael.
