When she first observed an empty chair reserved for the absent Soviet Jewish "twin" unable to mark her 13th birthday in similar fashion at a Shaarey Zedek Bat Mitzva, Sheri became interested in working on behalf of Soviet Jewry. To become a Bat Mitzva in spring 1985, Sheri has been twinned with Ann Ioffe, daughter of Aleksandr and Rosa Ioffe of Moscow. In 1976, the Ioffe family applied to emigrate to Is- rael. They were refused on grounds of Ioffe's "secrecy." In his prev- ious work, he had dealt only with mathematical problems and published papers on this topic in academic journals in the USSR and abroad. Upon receipt of their re- fusal, Dr. Ioffe was demoted to a lower teaching position and was told by authorities that his family's case would not be reconsidered until 1982, when their son, Di- mitry, would be of draft age. Dr. Ioffe was an active participant in the scientific seminars that were held regularly by Dr. Viktor Brailovsky in Moscow. After Brailovsky's arrest, the Ioffe house was put under surveillance and he was threatened with his fel- low refusnik's fate. Sheri has been writing to Ann and other members of the Wagner family have also sent letters. The freedom concert features Anachnu Khan-We Are Here, a 90-member troupe of Is- raeli musicians, dancers and singers whose first performances were in the Soviet Union, before they emigrated to Israel.
