The Role of Angels in the Bible, Judaism

Angels play a unique role
in Jewish thought on the
glorification of God. First
mentioned in the Bible (I
Kings 22:19; Isaiah 6; and
Job 1:6); they constitute the
heavenly equivalent of an
earthly royal court, who
serve as the retainers and
messengers of the Holy One.
The Talmud assigns two
sorts of beings to the world:
the tachtonim (those who
live below, i.e. human be-
ings) and the elyonim (those
who dwell above, i.e. the
angels).
God created the angels to
be immortal beings. There-
fore they need not food or
drink nor do they replenish
their own kind. Angels are
similar to people in three
ways: both possess knowl-
edge; both stand erect; and
both converse in Hebrew.

Although angels are im-
mortal and other-worldly
creatures, a still more pow-
erful class of beings are the
righteous. As the Talmud
states (Shabat 8D), "In the
Hereafter, the Almighty
will allow the righteous to
stand even closer to the
heavenly throne than do the
hosts of angels."
