The Best of Everything

(Continued from Page 34)
for certain.
Randy is in his early 40s
. . . grew up in Bel Air,
Calif., a part of the Beverly
Hills - Hollywood set that
his father's fame entitled
him to . . . Neighbors num-
bered a host of music and
motion picture celebrities
. . . He had an extraordinary
talent that labeled him as a
child prodigy, performing
classical concerts at an
early age.
Randy soon emerged from
the shadow of his famous
father and created his own
comfortable style at the
keyboard.
But he had another
life-long passion ... golf
... and for 15 years was a
golf pro ... sitting down
at the club house piano
bringing friendships
with Arnold Palmer,
Gary Player and other
greats of the links .. .
Randy became part-
owner of a country club
in San Diego but missed
the music circuit warmth
. and returned to his
first love . . . entertaining
at the piano.
Randy's style is hard to
pinpoint . . . There are
similarities to several of his
mentors, including dad .. .
One thing for certain,
though, Randy has com-
plete command of the piano
. . . with plenty of sensitiv-
ity to subleties that make a
love song romantic and a
pop tune jump.
Anton's is open seven
days a week . . . There's no
cover charge but reserva-
tions are suggested.
OPERA NIGHT at
Mario's on Second is this
Tuesday.
GOOD WAITRESS
DEPT. . . . Jane Ewald .. .
at Sero's on Northwestern
north of 12 Mile . . . with the
beautiful smile . . . so very
attentive to her customers
. . . and graciously efficient.
(Sero's on Northwestern,
by the way, is now open til 4
a.m. seven days a week,
serving everything from
breakfast to flaming
cheese.)
BESS BONNIER Duo
ends tomorrow night .. .
joined by Jack Brokensha
on vibes to make it a trio .. .
at Caucus Club, Penobscot
Bldg., W. Congress . . . She
is one of the area's most
creative musicians and a
noted jazz pianist.
Across the streeet at sis-
ter nitery, London Chop
House, Mel Ball and Col-
ours continues its easy lis-
tening and dancing style
Monday through Saturday
from 9 p.m.
IT'S LIKE BEING on an
overnight jaunt to New
York . . . and taking in one
of those pretty little places
that abound in the Big
Apple ... This is Marlowe's,
the night club that opened
Dec. 7 in the lower level of
Vineyards Restaurants,
Franklin Road off North-
western Hwy.
But still another dimen-
sion has been added to this
beautiful place people rave
about Now on Monday

evenings is the big band
sound . . . with cocktails and
dancing to music of the 30s,
40s and 50s.
First groirp to open the
big band Monday evenings
is J. C. Heard and his 12-
piece group through April.
My, oh my, how the
memories came back as
J.C. and the fellows went
into things like "Every-
thing But You," or Duke
Ellington's "Don't Get
Around Much Anymore"
or the soft "You Don't
Know What Love Is" and
chart for beautiful sax
tones ... So much close
dancing by older folks
doing steps they did at
the Graystone, Grande,
Oriole Terrace, Vanity
and other ballrooms of
yesteryears.
Even the younger set
were on the floor dancing to
the music mom and dad al-
ways talked about . . .
They've discovered how
great it is . . . and now know
what theft'. parents meant.
The accoustics at Mar-
lowe's, with its new ceiling,
are unbelievably great .. .
with wonderful, double-
time, two-step rhythms like
"Things Ain't What They
Used To Be" . . . or the nice
and easy Duke Ellington
masterpiece, "Prelude To A
Kiss."
So many people sitting
and listening, also . . . "This
is music!" they said as
partners nodded heads in
avid agreement . . . No
amplification except a bit of
piano . . . Even background
melodies are big band sound
when J.C. and the boys take
a break.
The design of Mar-
lowe's ... no cover or
minimum at any time .. .
is a contemporary setting
with a nod to the elegant
cabarets of yesterday's
"Swing Era" • • •
Award-winning designer
Alexis Lahti offsets his
motif of black marble,
burgundy carpet and
etched mirror . . . with the
glow of neon from room's
archways ... and illumi-
nated glass brick in Mar-
lowe's entranceway plus
around the bar.
Marlowe's is a class oper-
ation . . . The big band setup
now for Monday nights puts
it in an area by itself now.
J.C. Heard performs from
7:30 p.m. to midnight .. .
and according to Marlowe's
Entertainment Manager
Les Kahrnoff, his New
Year's Eve appearance
there was inspiration for
"Big Band Mondays" .. .
"People who love big band
music can enjoy dinner up-
stairs, kick up their heels on
the dance floor, and still
make it to work on time
Tuesday morning."
Rest of the week is con-
temporary dance music at
Marlowe's . . . with Strider
featured tomorrow night.
That big band sound
makes Marlowe's and Vine-
yard's Restaurants upstairs
an unbeatable Franklin
Center combination.
AFTER 157 YEARS,
Ludwig Von Beethoven

comes to life . . . in a comedy

opening March 13 at Fisher
Theater . . . It's Peter Us-
tinov • starring in "Beetho-
ven's Tenth" . . . running
four weeks through April 18
as part of a cross country
tour before Broadway ..
The 20th Century as seen
through the eyes and heard,
for the first time, by 213-
year-old Beethoven,, pro-
vides an evening of much
laughs . . . It was also writ-
ten by Ustinov and co-stars.
George Ross.
TOP 40 dance band,
Citizens, is appearing at
Hurley's in Northfield Hil-
ton, Crooks Rd. at 1-75,
Troy, through March 31 . .
Monday to Saturday eve-
nings.
WASHINGTON
THEATER on Main Street,
Royal Oak, probably the
oldest operating movie the-
ater in Michigan (opened
doors in 1922) with its art
deco surroundings, is show-

Friday, March 9, 1984 35

Fancy and humor, early
and constantly indulged,

ing a lineup of classic mo-
tion pictures . . . Hepburn
and Tracy are today
through Thursday; James
Cagney, March 16-22; Ed-
ward G. Robinson, March
23-27; and Bogart, March
28-April 5.
EMPLOYEES FI-
NALLY get recognition
they deserve . . . as Michi-
gan Restaurant Association
and AAA's Michigan Living
Magazine team up to spon-
sor a state-wide contest
honoring restaurant em-
ployees . . . It is called the
Most Hospitable Person
Contest and open to anyone
who works at a restaurant
. . . First prize is an all-
expense-paid trip to the Na-
tional Restaurant Associa-
tion Trade Show in Chicago,
$500 cash and a weekend for
two at Sugar Loaf Resort
near Traverse City in
northern Michigan . . .
That's a pretty good tip! .. .
