Canada's eastern prov-
inces, New Brunswick,
Nova Scotia, Prince Edward
Island and Newfoundland
still have pockets of Jewish
population but not of the
same magnitude as the
Jewish presence in Ontario,
Quebec and the western
provinces. Jewish maritim-
ers usually depart for points
west once they . have com-
pleted their university or
professional training.
While the Canadian
Jewish population of about
300,000 is miniscule corn-
pared to close to six million
Jews in the United States, it
has a very sharp profile in
the Canadian economic pic-
ture.
The Jewish component
in the wholesale and re-
tail market is very pro-
nounced in Canada. One
of the major food outlets
in Canada is the
Montreal-based Stein-
berg's organization.
Founded by a prominent
Montrealer, the Steinberg's
empire is particularly
strong in Quebec and On-
tario. It is instructive to
note that in some of the On-
tario center the firm's name
is "Miracle Mart" — a name
change, it is said, induced
by anxieties about an exces-
sively Jewish sounding
name.

TORONTO (JTA) — Per-
haps the most underre-
ported Jewish community
in Canada resides in Van-
couver, British Columbia,
Canada's western-most
province. Affectionately
termed Canada's "lotus
land," Vancouver provides
its one million-plus inhabi-
tants with unrivaled scen-
ery and year round mild
weather.
These two factors alone
explain in part the western
drift of Canada's Jewish
population. Many of Van-
couver's 20,000 Jews have

WINNIPEG (ZINS) —
The Canadian Immigration
Department canceled a rul-
ing in 1982 that would have
allowed Israelis to enter
Canada without a visa.
Canadians are permitted
to enter Israel without
visas, but a Canadian offi-
cial said the change in
Canada was cancelled be-
cause of Israel's invasion of
-Lebanon.

Congregation Adat Shalom
Kent Rogers
industrial giant in Canada
is the Cadillac Fairview
construction corporation
which is Jewish in the sense
that many of its top direc-
tors have been Jews. Much
of the high rise construction
which dots the metropolitan
areas of Canadian cities
from Halifax through west-
ern Canada originated with
Cadillac Fairview planners.
So successful have they
been that the company has,
for the last decade, extended
its market into the United
States where Cadillac Fair-
view building standards
and designs are being intro-
duced into Texas, Florida
and other American states.
Canadian Jewry's
support for Israel has
been one of the commu-
nity's characteristic ele-
ments. During the 1947-
1948 War of Indepen-
dence the number of
Canadian Jews who vol-
unteered to fight for the
nascent Jewish state was
higher on a percentage
basis than the American
contingent.
The halcyon days of the
Canada-Israel entente,
however, seem to be a thing
of the past. During a recent
farewell interview with the
media, Israel's ambassador
to Canada, Yeshiayahu
Anug, parried questions
about the relationship be-
tween the two -states by
stressing the excellent eco-
nomic and trade activities
existing between the two
countries.
Since late 1983, both
Canada's Minister of Ex-
ternal Affairs, Alan
MacEachern, and Prime
Minister Pierre Elliott
Trudeau have been making
policy statements about
Canada's Mideast position
which indicate a departure
from traditional Canadian
views on the subject. Both
MacEachern and Trudeau
chose to make their policy
statements during trips to
Arab countries, designed to
strengthen Canadian ties
with the latter.
