Study Finds High Rise
Dwellers in Israel Happy
HAIFA — Most Israelis
living in high rise buildings
do not experience the feel-
ings of loneliness and
alienation reported by their
Western counterparts, ac-
cording to a recent study
conducted by Dr. Arza
Churchman of the Technion
and Dr. Yona Ginsburg of
Tel Aviv University.

Dr. Churchman attri-
butes the positive feelings
held by Israelis to certain
aspects of the Israeli lifes-
tyle. "Physical environment
is not the only factor which
determines a resident's
satisfaction," she explains,
"but their interactions with
the people around them."
The research showed that
Israeli neighbors maintain
close relations in high rise
buildings, in contradiction
to stereotypes of neighbor
anonymity. According to
the study, 70 percent of the
respondents exchange help
with some of their
neighbors and 66 percent
exchange visits. Further-
more, the residents felt they
were able to develop active
ties with their neighbors.
Only three percent of the
high rise residents ques-
tioned did not know any of
the neighbors on their floor
and 67 percent knew them
all.

cording to Dr. Chur-
chman.
During the study, the re-
searchers interviewed resi-
dents in three middle class
neighborhoods in Haifa. All
three neighborhoods in-
cluded mixes of buildings
varying in height from four
stories and up.
