THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Raids Retaliate for Attacks on IDF TEL AVIV (JTA) — Is- rael Air Force jets bombed targets in the Aley area near the Beirut-Damascus highway in two separate raids Monday. A military communique said a three- story building that served as a base for terrorist at- tacks was hit in a raid in the morning. The planes re- turned at noon to blast other targets in the area. All re- turned safely to their bases, a military spokesman said. Beirut Radio reported that 12 Kfir fighter- bombers took part in the morning raid, four dropping bombs and the rest flying cover. The Druze radio sta- tion in the nearby Shour Mountains said the build- ing hit in the morning raid was demolished but there were no casualties because it was unoccupied. The latest air strikes fol- lowed the wounding of 15 Israeli soldiers in separate incidents in south Lebanon on Sunday. Eleven soldiers were hurt, one seriously, when three explosions rip- ped the Sidon port area. Four other soldiers were wounded when their vehicle struck a land mine near Baloul village in the east- ern sector. The Sidon port was closed down indefinitely despite protests from local residents. An Israel Defense Force spokes- man said it would remain closed while troops car- ried out an inch-by-inch search for clues to the perpetrators of Sunday's attack. "We will turn over every fishing net, examine every board and building in the area until we are satisfied," he reportedly told residents who pointed out that most imports into south Lebanon, including food, comes through Sidon. Two ships attempting to enter Sidon port on Monday were turned away. The Sidon quay has been the scene of four other at- tacks against IDF personnel in recent weeks and Israeli military sources said they may be intended to create unrest among residents of Israel-occupied south Leba- non. According to the sources, the local populace is resentful of-the wide- spread searches which fol- low such incidents and the possible closure of the Sidon port.
