Last month Beate Klarsfeld held a press conference at the Ameri- can Jewish Committee office in New York dur- ing which she described her recent visits to Chile, Paraguay and Argentina in pursuit of Nazi crimi- nals. In Chile, she tried to get the Pinochet govern- ment to extradite to Ger- many, Walter Rauff, the former SS colonel who invented the mobile gas chambers in which some 200,000 Jews were killed. The Chilean government turned her down.' In Paraguay, government officials agreed to extradite Dr. Josef Mengele, if they can find him. The Klarsfelds were partially responsible for bringing the "butcher of Lyon," Klaus Barbie to trial in France.
