Rabin Issues Plea for Aliya

LARRY FREEDMAN

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Former Israeli Premier Yit-
zhak Rabin warned last
week that if the Jewish
people fail to meet "the chal-
lenge of aliya to Israel," it
might have an impact on
the future of the Jewish
state.
Addressing an aliya as-
sembly at Cong. Kehilit
Jeshurun here, sponsored
by the North American
Aliya Movement in con-
junction with the Israel
Aliya Center, Rabin, pre-
sently a member of the
Knesset and a leader of the
opposition Labor Party, said
that the issue of aliya is the

"most important" issue fac-
ing Israel today.
"I believe that the ques-
tion of how many Jews will
live in Israel is, in the long
run, more important than
the issue of Lebanon, or the
PLO," Rabin declared. He
said that "everything would
have been different" as far
as Israel's standing in the
world community and its re-
lations with the Arab coun-
tries is concerned, if there
were in Israel today six or
seven million Jews instead
of only 3.5 million."

Sharon Charges 'Collusion'
in Slowdown of Settlements

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Prime Minister's office
flatly denied Monday
former Defense Minister
Ariel Sharon's charge that
the government was collud-
ing with the United States
to slow down settlement ac-
tivity on the West Bank.
Sharon, a Minister -
Without - Portfolio, alleged
that there was a "silent
agreement" between Israel
and the U.S. to stop the set-
tlements. "There is no need
to exert pressure on Israel.
Israel is giving up without
pressure," he contended in a
speech to the Council of
Jewish Settlements in
Judaea and Samaria.
Political sources branded
Sharon's accusation "a bla-
tant lie." The Prime Minis-
ter's office issued a state-
ment saying that Jewish
settlements "throughout
Eretz Israel" continue and
would continue according to
government policy.
Many settlers are dis-
mayed, however, by re-
ports that funding for set-
tlement activities would
be reduced within the
framework of Finance
Minister Yigal Cohen-
Orgad's austerity budget
introduced last month.
The budget for fiscal 1985
represents a desperate at-
tempt to slash government
expenditures across the
board in order to deal with
Israel's worsening economic
situation.
But militant settlers of
the Etzion bloc south of
Jerusalem protested
against a freeze of settle-
ment funds by establishing
a symbolic "new settle-
ment" on Monday called
Eiruvim near the
Jerusalem - Hebron high-
way. It consists of three
tents, two water tanks and
an electric generator. A new
settlement had been proj-
ected for the site but work
was abandoned for lack of
funds.
The settlers, most of them
yeshiva graduates, rushed
to the site "before the Arabs
take over." They began to
fence off the area "to pre-
vent penetration by Arabs
into state-owned lands," ac-
cording to Shilo Gal, chair-
man of the Etzion Regional
Council.
Gal said the security

authorities approved the
move.
Sharon urged Jews to set-
tle in the heart of every
Arab populated area on the
West Bank. "Not one place
should be left without
Jews," he said.

God keep you from "It is
too late." When the fool has
made up his mind the mar-
ket has gone by.

to Bullets: IDF
Lists Expenses

TEL AVIV (JTA) — An
Israel soldier can eat for a
year on $550 while an
hour-long flight for him in
an F-15 will cost the IDF
almost $7,000, according to
a new IDF report.
Relative bargains are
available for an hour's Kfir
flight at $4,000, a trip on a
missile boat for $960 and a
light helicopter flight for
$460. By contrast, the re-
port revealed, if an M-60
tank runs its engine for an
hour without firing its guns,
it runs up a $300 bill, and
every M-16 bullet fired by
an Israeli soldier costs
about 16 cents.
