THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

GOING ON VACATION?

ert. But Israel has settled a
Bedouin tribe in a stable
place. The members of this
tribe have lived for genera-
tions in tents without any
comfort. The women had to
carry jugs of water from a
well a distance of a half-
mile. Now they were placed
into normal apartments
with hot and cold running
water and other comforts.
The Israeli authorities
succeeded in convincing
Bedouin families to adapt
themselves to modern
times.
A few years ago Be-
douins continued to
wander, looking for pas-
ture. This period is now
coming to an end because
of industrialization.
In Jaara, in the Western
Galilee, near the Lebanese
border, a village was
erected for Jews and Be-
douins. It is hard to distin-
guish between the two
groups in this village. Be-
douin children are learning
in Hebrew schools and
speak Hebrew fluently.
Many Bedouins are also
serving in the Israeli Army,
especially in scouting units
as they kn6w well the desert
and border territories.
Nazmi and his brother
Lutfi serve in the Border
Guard. They enlisted years
ago and have become offi-
cers. Nazmi told us the story
of the Israeli-Bedouin vil-
lage. Thirty years ago it was
decided to build a village for
agricultural work. Families
of a Bedouin tribe were
brought in and none have
left the place.
The two brothers are not
the first to enlist in the Is-
raeli army. In their family it
has been a tradition for
years. Their grandfather
Mahmud Abdul died as an
Israeli soldier in 1956, their
father was killed in the Yom
Kippur War in 1973. They
admit that they were at-
tacked by terrorists who de-
stroyed their house in the
village because they served
in the Israeli army and were
loyal citizens of Israel.
There are young Be-
douins who wish to join a
kibutz. Some are already
working in the Kibutz Elon
and have become ardent
partisans of kibutz life. A
Jewish youngster told us:
"We have our special cus-
toms and traditions and
they have their own concep-
tions of morale, honor, etc.
We are not taking out their
daughters and the Bedouin
youngsters are not keeping
society with our girls. But
we have many friends
among them, we have com-
mon interests and feel com-
fortable in their company."
The village has solved the
problem of integration. But
many youngsters are leav-
ing the village.
The Bedouin youngster
has no relatives in the
city and no connections
there. He stays in the vil-
lage. Bedouin families

are building more houses
in the village than Jewish
families. For each Jewish !
house there are 10 Be-
douin houses. This is be- I
cause when the Bedouin 1
youngsters marry, they I
stay in the village and
continue the work of -
their fathers, whereas the 1
new Jewish generation 1
tends more to take up I
technological profes-
sions.
But in spite of the difficul-
ties, this village proves that I
with good will one can
create a favorable atmos-
phere for peaceful co-
existence between different I
people, languages and tra-
ditions.

According to tradition,
Abraham originated the
morning prayers, Isaac the
afternoon prayers and
Jacob the evening prayers.
