Histadrut Pays Tribute to Shrodecks

Campaign of Metropolitan
Detroit will pay tribute to
Isadore and Leah Shrodeck
"for a lifetime of service to
the cause of Labor Zionism"
at a testimonial luncheon

The Shrodecks were
members of the second
group of pioneers (which
they helped organized) that
sailed for Palestine on April
29, 1933, shortly after their
marriage. The group of 30
young men and women
went to Kibutz Degania B,
where Mrs. Shrodeck be-
came the first English
teacher in the Jordan Val-
ley. Her husband worked in
the fields and both were
subsequently asked to join
the Hagana.
Upon their return to De-
troit, Mrs. Shrodeck was
graduated from Detroit
Teachers College. She
taught Hebrew and Yiddish
at the Hayim Greenberg
Hebrew Yiddish Shule,
where she headed the nur-
sery school, taught Hebrew
in the upper grades and
later became principal of
the school.
She has been active in
Labor Zionist circles and
is presently secretary of
the Labor Zionist Coun-
cil.

joined the Hagana in 1934.
Upon his return to the
States in 1935, ,he continued
his Zionist activities and
was one of the founding
members of the Brenner
Branch of Labor Zionist Al-
liance. He is a former
chairman of the LZA Coun-
cil and is presently execu-
tive vice president of the
Histadrut Campaign and
vice president of Detroit
LZA Council.
He was chairman of the
Metropolitcan Division of
the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign and president of the
Detroit Zionist Council. He
also is a member of the
Jewish Community Council
Executive Committee and
its committee on interna-
tional concerns.
Shrodeck is active in the
Detroit Zionist Federation
and was a delegate to the
founding convention of the
American Zionist Federa-
tion.
Guest speaker at the
event will be Nahum
Guttman, long time na-
tional Labor Zionist
leader.
Born in New Jersey,
Guttman was raised in
Minneapolis, where he
earned a degree in agricul-
ture at the University of
Minnesota and was an
honor graduate of the

Organization at Oakland
University received a cash
prize and was named "first
place student organization
excellence award winner"
by the Student Activities
Board at the university. The
organization won the prize
for programming for the fall
1983 term.

During World War II,
Guttman served with the
U.S. Seventh Army in
Europe, winning a bronze
star for his work in the
254th Infantry Regiment.
After hostilities ceased, he
was assigned to the educa-
tion and information
branch. He did volunteer
work among the Jewish DP
camps, in cooperation with
the Palestine Jewish
Brigade. As war correspon-
dent for the Independent
Jewish Press Service, he
wrote many articles for
Anglo-Jewish periodicals.

Proceeds will be used
to establish the Isadore
and Leah Shrodeck Per-
petual Scholarship Fund.

science at the New School
for Social Research in New
York.
In 1934, Guttman was
called to New York to be-
come the first national sec-
retary of the Habonim
Labor Zionist movement.
He later became national
secretary of the Hehalutz
Organization of America,
which trained hundreds of
youth for pioneer work in
Israel. He was on the edito-
rial board of the "Jewish
Frontier."

BB, JNF Join for Brunch

The 10th Metro-Detroit
Bnai Brith Forest in Israel
will be inaugurated by De-
troit's Bnai Brith and
Jewish National Fund at
the 18th annual Bnai Brith
Presidents' Breakfast to be
held at 10 a.m. April 1 at
Cong. Shaarey Zedek. The
new forest is located in the
Galilee.
The event honors the
heads of Bnai Brith Men's
and Women's Councils,
lodges and chapters. The
guest speaker will be Lt.
Col. Haim Sarid of Israel.

Spring Educational Series

Marcia Kersch, education
vice president of the
Greater Detroit Chapter of
Hadassah, announces that
Hadassah and the Midrasha
College of Jewish Studies,
are planning two educa-
tional series for spring.
One series is slated for
10:30 a.m. March 14, 21 and
28. Luncheon will follow
March 14.
A second series is planned
for 7:30 p.m. March 22 and
29. Refreshments will be

a program on "Who Are The
Chaldeans?" at 10 a.m.
