`Iran Victory
Danger to Israel'

Sho Gun

LONDON (JTA) — A vic-
tory by the Iranian forces
would be more dangerous
for Israel than if the Iraqis
win the Persian Gulf war,
Abba Eban, former Israeli
foreign minister said here.
Vowing preference for
neither side in the bloody
four-year-old conflict, he
said he did not want to see
Israel become the prime
target for an irredentist
Shiite Islam led by Iran's
Ayatollah Khomeini.
Such a prospect made it
all the more important for
Israel to withdraw from
southern Lebanon and so
avoid having to rule the half
a million Shiites living in
that area, Eban said.
Such a withdrawal, he
argued, would have to in-
volve a security arrange-
ment with Syria.

TORONTO (JTA) — The
League for Human Rights of
Bnai Brith Canada has
urged the Canadian federal
government to name Raoul
Wallenbeig, the Swedish
diplomat who saved some
100,000 Hungarian Jews
during the Nazi occupation
of that country, an honorary
citizen of Canada.
Despite a Soviet claim in
1957 that Wallenberg died
of a heart attack in prison
10 years earlier, reports
that he is alive have sur-
faced as recently as 1978.
In 1983, the United
States named Wallenberg
an honorary citizen, only
the second time it had ac-
corded a foreigner that
honor. The first was
Winston Churchill.

Ethics Queried

BEERSHEVA — The fact
that 100 abortions are per-
formed each day in Israel
points to the lack of
adequate medical ethics
education, according to Dr.
Immanuel Jakobovits,
Chief Rabbi of Great Brit-
ain, who spoke at Ben-
Gurion University of the
Negev recently.
