COUPON,

Since 1959

one of the major challenges
of our time, the problem of
world hunger. JDC, in con-
junction with the overseas
relief agencies of the two
other major faiths in the
United States, has been in-
strumental in the setting up
of a cooperative national
body with this issue as its
focus.
The Interfaith Hunger
Appeal (IHA), sponsored by
Catholic Relief Services
(CRS) and the Protestant
Church World Service
(CWS), in addition to JDC,
is making a concerted effort
to bring the issue of hunger
to the forefront of the con-
sciousness of the American
public.
According to the experts,
there is enough grain pro-
duced each year to provide
every man, woman and
child with 3,000 calories per
day. Yet, at the most con-
servative estimate, more
than 100 million people
around the world are
chronically underfed.
It is to address this
problem that the IHA
was formed in 1978. In
1980 the IHA was picked
to be one of the selected
"clients" of the Advertis-
ing Council of America, a
voluntary body repre-
senting the advertising
industry which seeks to
bring select philan-
thropic and public inter-
est causes to the attention
of the American public.
The council works with
the support and advice of
major business corpora-
tions, top advertising
agencies and the media,
all of whom donate their
services.
Through the ad council
millions of people around
the nation have been ex-
posed to the interfaith mes-
sage that Protestants,
Catholics and Jews have
come together on this issue
and have learned of the im-
portance of the work of the
IHA and the three support-
ing agencies. More than
8,000 people have re-
sponded with donations
providing much needed in-
come for the more than 400
hunger-related programs of
the sponsoring agencies in
125 countries.
The value of time and
space contributed gratis
during 1981 and 1982 alone
would have cost $51 million
if purchased through nor-
mal commercial channels.
This figure includes the air-
ing of 60, 30 and 10 second
spots on network and local
radio and television, news-
paper advertising, con-
sumer magazine ads, ads in
the business press and com-
pany publications and the
placement of transit cards

The religious community
of America has a long his-
tory of cooperation in inter-
national relief. Through the
American Council of Volun-

tary Agencies in New York
of which JDC is a founding
member, and the Interna-
tional Council of Voluntary
Agencies in Geneva, the
agencies have evolved a

tradition of working to-
gether domestically and
overseas. With the incep-
tion of the IHA, however, a
whole new level of coopera-
tion is under way.
