One foolish waiter popped a champagne cork while Jan was singing . . . cer- tainly no excuse for this ignorance . . . It was at a table of avid opera lovers .. . and they were aghast. All are seasoned per- formers with wide vocal ranges and operatic finesse ... No mic- rophones are needed, as the beautifully-rounded strong voices enveloped Mario's air with a melodious aroma. The class of Mario's with its double table cloths was as fine a dinner spot locale as could be found by the ex- cellent troupe of which Florence Larime is hostess . . . Jack's gracious, efficient ways are always a delight . . . and the manner of serv- ice between sets is such that allows joyous relaxation. This is intimate opera at its best . . . nothing heavy . . . more to the light side in many languages . . . encompassing opera, operettas and songs like "Be My Love," "Grenada," "Hava Nagela," "Never On Sunday," "Fiddler On The Roof' medley, etc. . . . plus David doing a piano rendi- tion in memory of Ethel Merman . . . Even song re- quests of all kinds after and during dessert. The accoustics at Mario's are excellent . . . and it's a fun night . . . The perfor- mers do much to make it so in their fast-paced cohesion for a truly enjoyable eve- ning . . . Dino is an excellent showman . . . his "Figaro" is superb as he walks around the room . . . even opening kitchen doors calling out "Figaro!" Dino also does "Where Shall I Go" in both Yid- dish and English ... learned while at the Catskill Mountains ... booked there by an agent named Max Fisher. Entire troupe sang "Hava Nagela" while strolling about the audience. The meal was superb .. . from antipasto to a very de- licious corn bisque to veal scaloppine marsala to won- derful gelatti Swiss choco- late ice cream. "Night At The Opera" by Larime Productions is a very impressive, class pre- sentation . . . Tonight it is at Bennett's Courtyard on Utica Road in Fraser. And then back to Mario's on March 27 ... No set menu this time, says Frank . . . people will be able to order as they wish. He'd better hire some more people with broad shoulders . . . that's prob- ably where people may be sitting on March 27 .. . What more can one ask for than wonderful food, excel- lent service . . . and superb entertainment? I know I'm not taking any chances . . . Frank is getting . w.
