It flatly rejected a com-
plaint by UNIFIL and by
the International Red Cross
that their representatives
were barred from entering
the Shiite village of
Marakha in south Lebanon
last week after an IDF
search for alleged terrorists
in the village which lies six
miles east of Tyre.
According to UNIFIL, its
officers attempted to enter
the village after hearing
gunfire and explosions
there and saw IDF helicop-
ters bringing re-
inforcements. But they
were blocked by Israeli
troops.
An IDF spokesman
said UNIFIL and Red
Cross ambulances came
to the village four hours
after the operation was
completed. He said the
villagers had demon-

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Gen. Gad Navon, chief
chaplain of the Israel De-
fense Force, arrived here
last week for a 15-day
American tour sponsored by
the Israeli Foreign Minis-
try. He said his message to
American Jewry was that
"We are all obliged to look to
Israel as the central place of
Jewish life today."
Rabbi Navon said that
while in the U.S. he would
meet with Jewish and non-
Jewish religious leaders,
appear before Jewish com-
munities, meet with Israelis
living in the United States
and, lecture at various
yeshivot. In addition to the
New York area, his tour will
take him to Los Angeles,
Miami Beach and Washing-

German Denies
Smuggling Nazis
Out of Europe

ROME — A German
physician mentioned in a
1947 report to the State De-
partment as a smuggler of
Nazis out of Italy under the
protection of the Vatican
has denied that he know-
ingly aided Nazis during or
after World War II, the New
York Times reported last
week.
The physician, Dr. Wollo
Nix, also said he had been in
constant contact with a
United States intelligence
agent during his work in is-
suing identity cards to
Germans who had none and
that he had no idea why the
charges had been made in
the State Department re-
port.

The Ashkenazic custom of
not naming a child after a
living relative stemmed
from the belief that it would
rob a person of a full life if
another carried ,his name
