Link Cancer,
`Growth Factors'

REHOVOT (JNI) — An
international team of scien-
tists based at the Weizmann
Institute has found a new
link between hormone-like
substances called "growth
factors," which are neces-
sary for normal cell growth,
and cancer-producing
genes. "Growth factors" are
small proteins that act as
"keys" to turn on the normal
growth in cells. They fit into
a "lock" or "growth factor
receptor" on the surface of a
cell to start the growth
process.
The new research
suggests that a virus may be
able to bypass the need for
the key by creating a mod-
ified version of the lock that
is permanently switched on,
transmitting the message to
grow continuously.
