singers, dancers and
musicians from all over
the Soviet Union
gathered in Vilna to es-
tablish a Jewish song and
dance ensemble.

Historical Status
for Neuengamme

BONN (JTA) — After
considerable pressure from
> abroad and from within the
country, the city-state
authorities of Hamburg
have decided to classify the
'former concentration camp
of Neuengamme as an his-
torical monument.
In Neuengamme, near
' Hamburg, some 55,000 in-
mates were killed. The con-
centration camp operated
from 1939 to 1945.
The former factory on the
site of the concentration
camp will be rebuilt to serve
as a memorial and an ex-
hibition hall.

tended period of Soviet per-
secution and hardship for
Jewish culture and com-
munal life, a group who
would later become
Anachnu Khan appeared on
stage.

Despite unending obsta-
cles and interference by
Soviet authorities, the
Vilna group's activities be-
came more widespread with
performances occurring in
Kovno, Riga and Kishinev.
In 1971, 15 years after its
founding, members of the
troupe emigrated to Israel.
They organized anew and
established Anachnu Khan.
They continue the
struggle to free Soviet
Jews having added to
their repertoire songs of
identification with those
they left behind.
Early in 1975, Anachnu
Khan made its first tour of
the United States and
Canada and appeared in
February 1976 before the
Second International Con-
ference on Soviet Jewry in
Brussels. In October 1976,
when Anachnu Khan cele-
brated the 20th year of its
existence, thousands of fol-
lowers, including former Is-
raeli Prime Minister Yit-
zhak Rabin, attended the
jubilee concert.
In 1977, the group repre-
sented Israel at the Interna-
tional Festival of Folklore
in Mexico.
Proceeds from the concert
will benefit the advocacy ac-
tivities of the DSJC includ-
ing mailing of packages and
phone calls to Soviet refus-
niks.
