Dr. Michael Berenbaum,
editor of the Washington
Jewish Week and past
executive director of the
Jewish Community Council
of Greater Washington, will
deliver the opening lecture
of the Israeli-American In-
tercultural Lecture Series,
under the auspices of Bar-
Ilan University at 8 p.m.
Wednesday in the Birming-
ham home of David
Holtzman.
The evening's topic will
be "From Powerlessness to
Power — the Jewish Trans-
formation." A specialist on
the Holocaust, particularly
on the writings of Elie
Wiesel, Dr. Berenbaum re-
ceived a PhD degree in reli-
gion and culture from
Florida State University in
1975, and in the academic
world has since been associ-
ated with Georgetown Uni-
versity, University of Mary-
land, George Washington
University and Wesleyan
University, in addition to
the Hebrew and Tel Aviv
' Universities and Colby-

Sawyer College.
He has won numerous
awards, has lectured and
written extensively particu-
larly on the Holocaust and
Jewish theology, and is on
the editorial boards of Net-
zach and Shoah.

Couple Celebrates 50th
Mr. and Mrs. Irving (Mol.
lie) Michaels of Farmington
Hills were honored recently
at a dinner-dance at the
Holiday Inn in Highland
Beach, Fla., on the occasion
of their 50th wedding an-
niversary.
The party was hosted by
their children, Mr. and Mrs.
Alvin (Debbie) Iwrey of
West Bloomfield.
The Michaelses were
married Jan. 27, 1934, in
New York City.
The couple renewed
their wedding vows
under a hupa held by
their three grandchil-
dren. Rabbi Israel Hal-
pern, rabbi emeritus of
Cong. Beth Abraham
Hillel Moses and a resi-
dent of Florida, officiated
at the ceremony. The
couple were attended by
Mrs. Bea Gordner and
Sidney Israel.

president of the sisterhood,
and her husband is a former
men's club president. Mrs.

Shaul Ben-Meir will be
guest soloist. A flutist in the
Detroit Symphony Or-
chestra, Ben-Meir will per-
form compositions by
Jewish composers.
Ben-Meir studied both in
his native Israel and in
England. One of his
teachers was Jean-Pierre
Rampal. Ben-Meir was
awarded the Silver Medal at
the International Wind
Competition in Helsinki,
Finland, when he was 21.
He was principal flutist of
the Haifa Symphony for
three years.
There is an admission

luncheon and the perform-

Police Confiscate
Hate T-Shirts
AMSTERDAM (JTA)
T-shirts with a portrait of
Hitler and the words in
English "European tour_
1939-1945" and list of the
countries occupied by the
Nazis in World War II have
been confiscated by police
from a shopkeeper in the-> <
town of Deventer in the
Netherlands. The police had
been alerted by a customer.
The shopkeeper stated
that he had obtained the
shirts from a wholesale firm
in Amsterdam which had
imported them from Great— ,
Britain where the shirts are
manufactured. The police
are now conducting an in-
vestigation.
