Talmud relates that a cer-
tain rabbinical student
would review his lessons
23 times over before he
felt secure enough to go
to class (Taanith 8A).
The 24 books fall into
three major categories: the
Pentateuch (Torah or
Humash) or Five Books of
Moses; the Prophets
(Neveim); and the Hagiog-
rapha (Ketubim). The
Tanach (entire Holy Scrip-
tures of the Jewish People)
was authored by the follow-
ing (all being inspired by
the Shekhina or Divine
Presence) according to the
Talmud (Baba Batra 14b):
Moses wrote his five
books (except for the final
eight verses in
Deuteronomy which were
completed by Joshua), the
paragraphs about Balaam
(Numbers 23) and the Book
of Job.
In addition to the eight
verses in the Humash,
Joshua wrote his own
book. Samuel completed
his book, Judges - and
Ruth. David with the as-
sistance of the 10 elders
(Adam, Melchizedek, Ab-
raham, Moses, Heman,
Jeduthun, Asaph and the
three sons of Korah)
wrote the bookk of
Psalms.
The prophet Jeremiah
wrote his own book, both of
the Books of Kings and
Lamentations. King
Hezekiah and his col-
laborators wrote Isaiah,
Proverbs, the Song of Songs
and Ecclesiastes. The An-
shei Knesses Hagadola
(Men of the Great Assem-
bly) wrote Ezekiel, the
Twelve Minor Prophets,
Daniel and the Book of
Esther.
Ezra the Scribe wrote his
book as well as the
Chronicles down to his own-
time. Nehemiah finished it
up.
The books of Proverbs,
Song of Songs and
Ecclesiastes presented some
difficulty during the fixing
of the Canon. Some rabbis
felt they should not be in-
cluded because they were
secular compositions while
others felt that all were
truly written in the "Holy
Spirit." The latter view pre-
vailed even as it did with
the Book of Job (although
there is a statement in the
Talmud to the effect that
Job never existed — it's just
a parable — Baba Batra
15a).
After the Canon was
completed, the rabbis
warned against any
further additions. God is
quoted as saying,
"Twenty-four books have
I written for you; beware
that you make no addi-
tion to them because of
making many books
there is no end"
(Ecclesiastes 12:12).
Thankfully however,
great flexibility was per-

mitted in interpretation
of the books. "Is not my
word like a hammer that
sunders a rock into
pieces" (Jeremiah 23:29).
Even as a hammer sends
many sparks flashing forth,
so too does a Scriptural
verse prove capable of many
fascinating and meaningful
interpretations.
