Begin Biography Published

LONDON (JTA) — A
comprehensive political
biography of Menahem
Begin has been published
here, only five months after
Begin's retirement as pre-
mier of Israel.
Entitled "Begin — A
Biography," its author is
Eric Silver who has just
completed 11 years as the
chief Israeli correspondent
for the Guardian and ob-
server newspapers of Lon-
don.
One of the book's British
reviewers has asserted that
this will prove to be the "de-
finitive" biography of Be-
gin. It is the first time that
so much fresh detail about
Begin has been assembled
in one book, stretching from
his origins in Brest Litovsk
to his political demise in
Jerusalem.
Much of the previously
published material about
Begin had come from the
prime minister's own
pen. It was contained in
his book "The Revolt,"
covering his leadership
of the Irgun Zvai Leumi,
and "White Nights," de-
scribing his year in a

Soviet "Gulag" camp in
1940.

Silver has amplified Be-
gin's record of that earlier
part of his life in interviews
with the former prime
minister's sister and other
contemporaries, whose ac-
counts have never before
been printed. Begin him-
self, however, refused to be
interviewed by the author.
