It's one of the first places may visitors ask to see when coming here. Each of the restaurants on the little street of Monroe has its following . . . but some folks like the diver- sification Greektown pro- vides. One of the better restau- rants along "The Strip" is Laikon Cafe, which has been there 80 years . . . Laikon in Greek means people's restaurant" . . . It seats about 110 downstairs and 80 upstairs. 1978 saw Laikon closed for almost a year when fire that started in the kitchen broke into a blaze ... and gutted the " TAKE THE FAMILY OUT TO DINNER KOW KOW INN CARL'S • the brat& amet FLING LIM'S • ■■■■■■•■■., THE GOLD COIN tk: Takw, —14 21 — •GOLDEN BOWL E Gt?EAT C .KING LIM'S GARDEN NEW KING AO. Then came my entree of boiled sea bass with side of sauce made of fresh lemon, oregano, parsley and pure olive oil . . . Also another big favorite at Laikon Cafe, peas cooked in a tomato sauce and dill . . . with an altogether _different taste of enjoyment. Jim fileted my sea bass to perfection . . . I tried count- ing the bones and couldn't find more than a tiny one. Laikon Cafe has a won- derful history . . . Back in the Depression of 1929 and 1930, then owner Ted Kan- nis had everybody who didn't have much money come in and sign their bill . . . After the Depression, he called them all in . . . gave a party . . . and tore up the slips. It is open six days, 11 a.m. to as much as 4:30 a.m. if people are in the restaurant ... Tuesday is a day of rest for all. Laikon in Italian means "eat well" . . . but in any language this name could relate "one of the best" in authentic Greek dining . . Gus and son Chris are justly proud of their Laikon Cafe . . . Polly the parrot that used to sit in the window as "official greeter" wouldn't recognize the place . . . even the windows he used to look out of are clean . . . The prices at Laikon Cafe have remained low . . . and the food is superb. The well-deserved praise from many about Laikon Cafe has already become a tradition. KNOW WHERE THOSE two wooden statues are that used to be on face of Brass Rail, on Adams in Downtown De- troit? . . . They're at Ka- van's on Rochester Road in Rochester . . . 30 years ago, Mort Stein would take his son Mark and daughter Marilyn to one of the theat- ers that bloomed . . . The youngsters would get off Woodward Ave. street car and run to rub the man's shoe for good luck. Recently, while in Rochester, Mort and Ber- nadine were at Kavan's where the statues were being put on . . . They (Continued oh" Page 35)
