Cystic Fibrosis
Bowl-a-Thon
Slated in March

Danny Raskin's

LISTENING
POST

ABOUT 15 OR 16
YEARS ago, all the Bnai
Brith Women chapters and
synagogue sisterhoods were
selling Jewish stars . . . On
the stars was someone's
name . . . a Russian Jew
who wanted to get to Israel.
Gloria Cooke bought a
few to give away as gifts .. .
but kept one for herself with
the name, "Boris Penson."
She wore the star for
years, then put it away to be
forgotten . . . That is, until
the end of last December
when Gloria tuned in to
Kevin Joyce's talk show on
WXYZ Radio . . . and heard
a young man speaking
about "The Students For
Soviet Jewry."
On a whim, she called to
talk with Glen Richter, and
told him about her Jewish
star . . . He asked the name
and Gloria was told Boris
now lived in Natanya, Is-
rael . . . that she should call
the Jewish Community
Council for his address.
Beverly Yost at the Coun-
cil wasn't sure of the spel-
ling, but Boris was sent a
letter from Gloria . . . Six
weeks later, a post card ar-
rived from him . . . alive and
well . . . It is Gloria's hope
that some day she and her
family will visit Boris and
his family . . . Seeing her
"star" will be the thrill of a
lifetime.
ALLYSON IMBER,
daughter of Fred and Sandy
Imber, was among only 30
students accepted in Mercy
College's School of Medical
Technology . . . Allyson's
plans are for a career in
cancer research.
ROBERT BERMAN is
new president of City of
Hope, Greater Detroit
Chapter (former Detroit
Businessmen's Group) .. .
Vice presidents are Dr.
Alan Dorfman and Leo
Papp; recording secretary
Esther Allan; and treasurer
Claire Miller . . . with Herb
Rechter, retiring president,
board of directors chairman.
Only 300 tickets are
being sold for May 27 fund-
raising event at Kingsley
Inn lunch.
CONGRATS ... to Joyce
and Bill Palmer . . . on their
33rd anniversary . . .
They're also a couple of busy
but happy grandparents .. .
with four grandchildren
being born in the last 22
months.
BARNEY AND RUTH
WORONOFF celebrated
their 50th wedding an-
niversary during vacation
in Desert Hot Springs,
Calif. . . . While there, they
were surprised by unex-
pected visit of children
Ralph and Beverly
Woronoff, who flew out from
West Bloomfield for the
weekend to share this occa-
sion with them . . . A kidush
in their honor was spon-
sored at the community
temple by former Detroiters
Lou and Faye Cohen, Sam

and Estelle Kaplan, Sol and
Sarah Priesont and Mollie
Rubinstein.
BACK IN 1936, Max
Fleischer went into the auto
repair business . . . Seven
years ago, at age 82, he
came out of retirement and
bought the building now
called LaSalle Body Service
on Orchard Lake Rd. be-
tween 12 and 13 Mile . . . It
was originally an airport
control tower and used for
civil defense during World
War II.
BERT OR ZENA GOR-
DON or Ricki Nederlander
are persons to call for May
reunion of S.O.C. Hadassah
group that put on shows
from 1953 to 1959 . . . rais-
ing hundreds of thousands
of dollars sent to Hadassah
Hospital in Jerusalem .. .
Bert and Zena, 547-2648 .. .
Ricki, 644-8050.
