of new members following
the appearance of its leader,
Jean-Marie Le Pen on a
television panel show Feb.
13, watched by at least 10
million people.
Asked by reporters why
they were joining the ex-
treme right-wing group,
most new members said
they were impressed by Le
Pen's frankness, especially
his remark that Jews in
France were over-protected
compared to other citizens.

They also claimed that
Le Pen was the only one
on the panel to defend
traditional values and
they agreed with him that
immigration must be se-
verely curtailed in order
to protect France's cul-
tural heritage.
Le Pen professed to have
nothing against Jews per-
sonally. But he told the -mil-
lions of television viewers
that he could not under-
stand why they needed
more protection than
others. He paid no attention
to the terrorist attacks on
synagogues and other
Jewish premises in recent
years in which lives were
lost and scores of people
were injured.
He insisted that no one
could accuse him of being an
anti-Semite simply because
he had no taste for the art of

Ireland Jewish
Population Down

NEW YORK (JTA) — Of-
ficial census statistics from
Ireland indicate a sharp de-
cline in the country's
Jewish population during
the past decade, the World
Jewish Congress reported
this week.
Figures released by the
Irish census bureau in Dub-
lin show that for the period
1971-1981 the Jewish popu-
lation had dropped some 20
percent at a time that the
general population had in-
creased by 15 percent. In
1971, census records indi-
cated that there were 2,128
Jews in the country. The
most recent data cites an es-
timated figure for the
Jewish population being be-
tween 1,500 and 1,900.

Marc Chagall or for the
policies and activities of
former Prime Minister
Pierre Mendes-France or
Health Minister Simone
Veil. Both Mendes-France
and Mrs. Neil are Jewish.
Asked why he has not
condemned those of his fol-
lowers who have repeatedly
made vulgar anti-Semitic
remarks, Le Pen replied he
could not restrict their free-
dom of expression. "I take
my friends with their qual-
ities and their faults," he
said.

PARIS — A U.S. State
Department official said
here last week that the Re-
agan Administration would
reconsider its decision to
withdraw from the United
Nations Educational, Sci-
entific and Cultural Organ-
ization (UNESCO) at the
end of this year if the UN
body would attempt to
change its highly politicized
procedures and programs.
Calling the American de-
cision to withdraw "firm,
but not final," Assistant
Secretary of State Gregory
Newell said that the Ad-
ministration would soon
name a panel of experts to
study the UNESCO situa-
tion.
