who has been corresponding
with the Finkelstein family
for many years, received a
letter from the family last
week from Israel. Eitan
Finkelstein has been an ac-
tivist in the Soviet Jewish
movement and is a friend of
prisoner of conscience Ana-
toly Shcharansky.
Finkelstein wrote in part:
"We'd had an extremely
hard time during last two
months (to say nothing of all
the previous years of living
in Soviet paradise). We got
the permission so unexpec-
tedly that it was just a shock
to us.
"The situation there is
so hopeless that we could
not imagine for a minute
that we'll be free in a
month (we got the per-
mission on the 18th of
November).
"There was a lot of diffi-
culties with docuinents,
then we had to wait (for
what?) for five days at the
border station in S. Union.
But the most difficult task
was the separation with our
relatives and friends who
are still there . . . The only
hope we have is perhaps we
are the first ones, not the
last.
"When we arrived at the
Lod Airport we got the other
shock — a lot of people were
awaiting for us — our
friends whom we didn't see
for so long-long years!
"The country is beautiful.
The people are beautiful.
The weather is beautiful —
but we are still so tired . . ."
Finkelstein went on to
say that the family has

BONN (JTA) — A group
of high school students who
have written a book on edu-
cation in Germany during
the Nazi era have called on
prominent politicians to use
their influence with the
West German government
to prevent arms sales to
Saudi Arabia.
The book, written by the
students,is called "School in
the Third Reich," and is
based on research work
done by the students in
their own families, schools
and neighborhoods.
The students addressed
Prime Minister Holger
Boerner of the state of
Hesse, who had made avail-
able funds to publish their
book. They told him that
they were especially in-
terested in the Saudi prob-
lem because they intend to
spend fees they collected on
an organized trip to Israel.
