SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. —
Israel's first equine ambas-
sador to the U.S. distin-
guished himself in the
world's most respected test
of Arabian horses in
Scottsdale, Ariz., last week.
Shatir, a seven-year-old
charismatic chestnut stal-
lion, earned top 10 honors in
a class of 42 stallions age
five years and older.
Among Shatir's competi-
tion were the most noted
Arabian stallions in the
world, many imported after
gaining top honors in Euro-
pean competition. Included
were seven stallions from
Russia.
Estimated value of the
stallions in the class is
upward of $36 million.
Owned by the Shatir Stud
of Rosh Pinna, Israel, the
Scottsdale top 10 stallion
was national champion
stallion of Israel in 1981.
Unlike his American
competition, Shatir was a
working cow horse in Rosh
Pinna. Exported to the
United States in July 1983,
Shatir was first exhibited in
Denver at the World Crab-
bet Symposium which hon-
ored crabbet (English-bred)
Arabian horses.
Gen. Haim Bar-Lev,
former IDF chief of staff,
noted horseman and chair-
man of the Israel-Arab
Horse Society, also attended
the symposium.
In December, Shatir
competed and was
named show champion in
his first U.S. competition
in Ocala, Fla.
Present last week in
Scottsdale, Ariz., were
Gidon Raski and Avram
Pilz, two of Shatir's owners.
Their farm, the Shatir Stud,
is the largest privately
owned stud in Israel.
